problems with clutch fluid

I'm in the process of buying an 1988 GXL off of a friend. We haven't gotten it to turn over yet so i'm gonna pull the lead plugs and put 20w50 or atf in the hole tomorrow, but i'm pretty sure it will run any way, so here is whats puzzling the crap out of me and two other mechanics: Clutch cylinder, Slave and the line between both have been replaced. The owner told me that he thinks he needs a clutch and said he can make it like a block up the street and then he cant activate the clutch to shift gears. When he opened the hood he noticed there was no clutch fluid in it. So he fills it up takes it back home and one mechanic comes out to look at it (who is also a friend we trust) and he bleeds the master cylinder. Then the owner drives up the street again and the same thing happens. So while i tried to crank it up the other day(yeah i just kept flooding the motor you could smell the gas ) i was like let me bleed it again. I bleed the line get my steady stream and the owner tells me he's got pressure so i'm like cool, thats whatsup. Turn the motor over again it wont crank and the owner puts his foot on the clutch and tells me he's got no pressure and the clutch stays on the floor after you depress it. So i don't see any fluid in the car to show signs of a leak. I get in the car and keep hitting the clutch pedal and after 30 times its back up to presure. I go back to letting the owner try to crank it and i see the smallest little bubbles coming through the clutch cylnder. So i'm like ok there gotta be air coming in somehow so when i pick it up i'll just do the clutch master cylinder. I drop a 4ag block off at a shop and run into the mechanic/friend that replaced the parts and he told me he's replaced the clutch master twice. So i told him what it did and he said he was with the owner when he tried to drive it and the fluid left the master after a block, but all that fluid loss and no signs of a leak!? This car was sitting for a year before the owner wanted to drive it again so any help on this would be great cause i'm stumped. 1988rx7 gxl 193,500 miles on original motor for 1000. Get the car or look elsewhere, the body is great and the last time the car ran it was smooth and has regular maintanence work done by guys who only touch rotaries minus me and the mechanic guy who switched the slave master and clutch line

are these new/rebuilt master cyls, or used?

Sounds like used ones that are leaking internally or a leaking at the fire wall and the fluid is running down inside the car between the carpet pad and fire wall.

i checked the inside of the car since my corolla did the same thing and it was good, any name brand stuff at the auto parts store that usually works as far as the clutch master is concerned, cause i'm thinking that maybe advance just sells bad clutch masters right now.

If the car starts, idles, and revs normally in neutral, I wouldn't write it off. It looks like you just have a clutch hyraulic problem, which is never particularly expensive to fix.

thanks crit i just need someone to reassure me cause my wife's pissed. I did a sr5 corolla to gts swap and recieved a bad motor. I was saving up for a new motor when i found the 7 for sale and have been racking my brain on if i should stay a toy man or go ahead and get the 7. My dream is to own both and pass them down to the kids and when the kids mess up the cars or move onto bigger and newer things put the rotary motor in the corolla as my final swap for me(T2powered AE86), but all the boys say rx7 and the wifey seems to have gotten attached to the corolla cause it was dependable with the 4ac in it. The most confusing thing is she likes the body from the corolla better. I like the rx7 body better but you dont see to many hatchback corollas in Greensboro NC.

thanks for the backup, i'd like to anounce that the slave was the problem, a friend told me to move the boot and look for fluid in the piston of the slave and there it was, upon removal the thing fell to pieces in my hand. Why didn't anyone tell me this car shifts so freakin smooth!?
