Problems With 88 RX-7 NA

So I picked this car up with 61K miles. It's super clean and ran ok when I bought it. Replaced the wires and plugs, replaced the fuel filter. Replaced both mufflers. Serviced/checked the BAC valve, confirmed compression, checked for vacuum leaks and it still runs like ****.

No power from Idle to about 3K, bright red glow around the O2 sensor. Could a bad O2 sensor be the problem or possibly clogged cats? I've messed with it for two weeks in my spare time and am getting extremely frustrated.

Check the timing. Maybe someone moved the CAS.

Have the injectors cleaned.

Looked for a thread on setting the timing. Never done before. Any advice/guidance would be greatly appreciated. I'm assuming a standard timing light will do the job. I have the Haynes Manual on order but it's not here yet.

I had removed the heat shields from the exhaust last weekend to access a leaking exhaust manifold gasket. Drove it after dark and popped the hood to see the exhaust manifold glowing bright orange. I punched out the converters, installed a new O2 sensor, bolted her back together and the car is running absolutely great.

Using the search function on this site has provided tons of info.

That's very odd. The O2 sensor is only used during light load cruising on these cars. I still think you should check your timing and TPS adjustment. At the same time, check the ACV valve.

I think the issue was the clogged converter. For whatever reason, with the clogged converter, the previous owner had unplugged the O2 sensor so that the car would run. After crowbarring the cat/pre-cat innards, I was able to plug in the O2 sensor and the car is running a ton better. I plan to purchase new converter. Any suggestions?
