Is this normal?

Hi Guys,

I noticed on the weekend that my car will roll down a hill quite slowly but will roll when in gear with the motor/handbrake off.

Is this signs of low compression and should I start thinking about a rebuild? or is it normal and I've just never noticed before?

Cheers,
Rian

Uh, if you think compression is low, test the compression. Any standard tester for piston engines will work; just remove the schraeder valve or hold the bleeder down.

For future posts you should also include information about your car. People aren't going to guess; they'll more than likely just ignore your thread.

sounds like a clutch problem.

I had this problem in my WRX and it turned out to be the clutch. I did notice it slipping during driving though.

My car doesn't hold itself on a hill as well as some piston cars either and I know my compression is fine. Unless you have some clutch slippage when driving, I doubt it's a clutch issue.
There is very little off-set from center on the eccentric shaft. This is one reason rotary engines don't produce alot of torque and I speculate it's the same reason they don't hold as well for parking unassisted with the handbrake.

On a side-note to the OP, it really helps if you title a thread with some keys words for the question your asking. Particularly if someone ever searchs with the same question.

Roll quite slowly = brake contact?
Roll in gear w/ engine off = are you parking the car vertically???

Thanks for the responses and the posting tips.

you can see the motor IS turning over as it does it so unlikely to be clutch slipping.

Sgtblue's post kinda confirmed my suspicion.

Quick99Si

My driveway has a bit of an incline but nothing too crazy.

It rolls quick if not in gear so doubt its brake contact.
