need reassurance on plan
Hey all and thanks in advance. I owned an '84 RX-7 one summer years ago and fell in love. Was young and broke so sadly had to let it go.
Am new here as you can see and am actively seeking a 1st gen RX-7 semi-project car. Had my mind set on an '84-'85 gsl-se because of the FI, engine size and disc brakes/suspension. I may be mistaken that it has 4 wheel disc brakes . . .
After looking at what was out there, am having second thoughts getting into a more complex vehicle (have had no experience repairing/maintaining FI) and honestly have found some sweet '79's for sale that I think may be better to get into and learn more simply as I go.
I definitely want to get into a running project car with as clean a body/undercarriage as possible. Have also found an '85 gsl-se for a great price, comparable to what I'm finding the '79's for ($1000 to $1500).
I am not looking to finish this car as fast as I can, I have a daily driver. Want something to drive minimally and take off the road on occassion for bigger upgrades/repairs. Am pretty technical and handy as well as willing to learn through any means necessary.
This is longer than I had planned but just probing the waters for what some experts might feel is the best way for me to go. Again, thanks in advance this forum has already been a wealth of valuable information!

Yep, GSL-SEs have 4 wheel discs.
I'd personally go for the '79. It is just my bias, but I like them far more then the later 1st gens. If the carb is easier for you to work on, then choose it. And there are many little projects that can be done to make the car a little better without having it off the road for weeks. For example, convert to an electronic dizzy, swap in a more modern alternator, etc.
Personally though I'd convert it to EFI by adapting a random throttle body to the intake (SAs have one of the best 12A intake manifolds) and using a Megasquirt.

Thanks much for the reply. I assumed I could do some bolt on work as you mentioned before digging into the more serious stuff.
Assumed I may be able to upgrade to EFI as well at a later date if I decided to tackle that bit. Will read some on what you mentioned.
I'm not looking to do a tricked out racer and hope I would be more apt to drive fairly normally regardless of the sporty nature of the car. Not saying I wouldn't lay into it on occassion for fun. Just older now and not into tickets or going 100mph sideways on main roads for fun heh.
