MI My FB has daddy issues

Bought a 1983 RX7 Fb with the 12a a few days ago. The guy said he thought it was a carb issue but before i start really dumping money I thought I would ask for other ideas. So on cold starts she rolls over great, but when driving I have no acceleration, and at 5k rpm in 4th gear i cant get over 60 mph. After driving if I cut the motor, then try to restart she i have to give it an abnormal amount of pedal to get it to roll over. In neutral I can crank on the throttle, and get great response, RPMs fly up, sounds good, but when I try to drive the issues start up again. If anyone can help Id greatly appreciate it. Again Im brian from michigan.

1st, clean your gas tank. Search 'marine clean' to find what I wish I had done. I suspect your fuel pickup is severely clogged. While at it change all the fuel lines you see and get a sock for the pickup.

After that the rest is easy.

welcome to the board.

cleaning and refurbishing the fuel system never hurts, but I think you should check your timing.

If it applies I've also heard a clogged cat will do this, especially rev fine in neutral but not under load.

That's exactly what it's doing, in neutral it idles a little high and RPMs climb great but as soon as I put it in gear and start rolling it bogs and loses power.

I agree, I also had a similar issue, turned the exhaust couldn't escape, hence smothering the engine.

it sounds like a timing/ignition problem and its breaking down under load, would check your plugs, leads dizzy then the timing

Found out today I have no compression, so it's up for sale, ******* sucks. I hate to sell it but I can't afford the parts.

The pressure gauge read 100 in cylinder one, and less than 20 in cylinder two. I'm at a me two impass of spend almost a grand for the master rebuild kit, or dropping in a piston engine and trans. But idk

You could always go with the SBC. I know it isn't sexy like a rotary, but it has a huge aftermarket behind it.

Craigslist is a wonderful place. I see 350s pop up rather frequently. Actually just the other day i got a fully rebuilt 2.3L ford out of an 88 turbo coupe with brand new internals for $45...just keep an eye out

I have a buddy who put in a Chevy 327 that he got from a trashed truck he found on Craigslist and talked the seller down because the only good thing was the engine. It's crazy to hear that rumble come from his sleek little FC!

^common reaction. Check out the norotors forum. Alot of cool builds in there, might give you a bit of an idea what to expect. See some pretty unusual swaps over there every once in awhile as well

just kidding . I have built a ton of off the wall stuff myself . really no concern about the cars it's the power trains that interest me mainly the engines . I think I have enough projects waiting by the time I get to them all I won't know what a car is anymore .
