Melted transmission wire/wire covering from blow torch
Hi guys,
First off I would like to say I really appreciate all the information on this site. I've spent the last couple months reading all the different information and suggestions on this site after buying my '93 FD3S. I've been buying up parts and this was the first weekend where I finally got a chance to work on the car. I decided the first project I was going to work on was fixing the loose shifter since it seemed liked an easy project. Unfortunately, I ran into a seized fill plug. It still wouldn't come out after I douse it will PB Blaster and left it overnight. After hours of useless struggles I finally decided to try to use a blow torch. The blow torch worked, however, because of my angle and first time using one I didn't realize the heat form the blow torch was going pass the screw and was melting away the plastic to the wiring connected to the transmission (see pictures).
Now I'm trying to figure out what options are.
- The safest thing is of course replacing the wire harness. Does anyone know the part number? Is it an expensive item? Also, I was trying to follow the harness up the top of the transmission but couldn't feel where it ends. Would replacing the harness require dropping the transmission?
- Does anyone know what these wires do? How much of a fire or safety hazard is it if I tape it up in electrical tape and drive it around to see if there's any issues? Or would it be possible to drive it to a shop in its current state?
- Would it be possible to cut and rewire the damage parts?
Thanks for putting up with my newb questions and I appreciate any help. Thanks!
Hard to tell for sure but it looks like just the loom cover melted and damage might be minimal. Pull off that corrugated cover and check wires. Worse case scenario would be to carefully cut anything with damaged insulation, add heat shrink covers and re-solder.
In the future I would NOT heat aluminum casting with a torch. A bit of Teflon tape on the plug threads will keep it from seizing and helps sealing.

Thanks for the reply! I saw this thread which mention using a blow torch, though for a second gen, so I didn't think it would be an issue (https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generati...l-plug-257999/). The drain plug right below the fill plug might be leaking and I was thinking of using the blow torch again to remove and put some teflon tape on it but I guess I'll leave it alone and hope it's not actually leaking.
