Just bought an fc and it starts for about 3 seconds and dies HELP!!!

I just bought a 89 fc rx7 and I’m having an issue with getting it running

i just bought this car the day of posting and I know a few things about it

it was originally owned by an older Japanese lady and it was driven very little as it has only 63k miles and it sat for about 5 years before the last owner bought it (before me the third owner) and when it was bought it was towed to the shop I currently work at and was driven through the parking lot and now has sat for about 8 months,

the issue I’m having now is that before I bought it I started it up and it ran but ran very rough and it would idle without throttle input and I started it about a week before I bought it, now today I bought it and I went to start it and it started and ran for about 5 seconds and died. It looked like it ran out of gas so I put about a quarter tank in it, and now it will start for about 3 seconds and run very rough and then die and won’t go past about 1500-2000 rpm only when the pedal is on the floor. I’m thinking it may be an issue with a clogged cat but I also think it could be an issue with plugs,

so far I’ve pulled out the fuel pump because when the key was turned to on it didn’t vibrate or anything like it was primed, but I disconnected the lines from the pump and it pushed fuel out when the key was turned to start. But didn’t prime like a normal fuel pump should(idk what these normally do) I’ve tried spraying starting fluid in the intake piping and it didn’t help.

also when moving the car back outside from the shop I noticed there was a dark colored liquid on the ground and it was the color of used oil but it smelled like fuel and by the time I pushed it outside it evaporated.

im really in need for some help here and i don’t know what to do as I have absolutely no experience with rotarys and I don’t know anyone that does. And I intended to buy this as a daily because my civic has become a bit of a racecar and a bit inconvenient to use as a daily. Thank you to anyone that can help

First off, welcome to the club. The issue you are experiencing sounds suspiciously like a failing airflow meter (AFM). Basically, the ECU is expecting a certain voltage reading from the AFM signal wire with the trapdoor/plunger in the fully closed position, and a different one when fully open. This is how it calculates airflow, and by extension, knows how much fuel to feed the engine. If this signal is out of whack or missing, it just "nopes" out and stalls as a failsafe. I can't recall the exact numbers offhand, but I'm fairly sure Series 5 (89-91) Turbos are similar to a 20B Cosmo if not identical.

Details and specifications are in the Factory Service Manual, available at Foxed.ca. Download it and the wiring diagrams, you'll be referring to it often. Just out of curiosity, what part of Ohio are you in? If you're stuck on something, I'm over here in Indianapolis

so I live in Columbus but the car is currently in plain city, I got it running about 30 minutes ago. We cut a whole in the exaust before the cat because we found that it was clogged so I’m going to try and drive it home and see what happens thank you for all the help and I’ll give you some more info when I get it home

so I just got home and it ended up running great on the way home aside from the smoke, which I believe was just **** left over from trying to start it. But I’m going to try and make it somewhere to get an oil change and coolant exchange done and see what happens

There is only one shop whom I would entrust anything rotary related to in the Columbus area. That is Defined Autoworks in Pataskala. Anyway, oil changes are a simple, easy DIY. 5 quarts of 10w-30 plus a filter, it's pretty much like any other car in this manner. Sometimes, when these engines sit for awhile, they're a bear to start for the reasons you've discovered. Some fresh spark plugs are probably a good idea, you'll need two BUR7EQ (leading/lower) and two BUR9EQ (trailing/top). If the weather stays decent, I'm planning on coming to Columbus to visit a few friends in the next couple weeks once things settle down a bit. Doing a compression test would be a good idea to see just how healthy your engine is after sitting. Usually, there's a reason why a car sits, and this will help de-mystify that.

so I found that it sat because of the cat issue and I’ve replaced the spark plugs since last post and it runs great, I have a friend that works at a Firestone that I trust and I am a mechanic as well I just didn’t want to try and drive it to my shop as it’s 30min from my house, I did although do the oil change in my driveway and I drive it to work to check everything out and other that the exaust being ducked rn it’s all I’m working order, compression test even came back perfect
