How much would an EXCEPTIONAL paint job cost?

First of all: Sorry if this is in the wrong section of the forum, but it only lets me post here, introduce yourself, and how to use board because of my post count.

I'm currently looking at buying a '94 RX-7 but it is the Blue/Green color version, and i don't really like how this color looks. I would like to paint the car either White, Black, or Red, and am wondering how much an exceptional paint job would cost. I know that changing the color rather than repainting is probably more. And I want a really good job done (i.e. old color doesn't show on inside of doors). About how much $ would this run me?

The answer can be only based on who you get and how far they want to go when painting the car,and HOW MUCH They want to Charge you!
You can get a crap paint job for 500 bucks.
A professional body and paint shop may run you 3K and up..
I am thinking for the Extensive work that you want them to do,at least $4k.The car would require a total stripping.

I recently was quoted by a very good shop $5000 to repaint my 85. This for a 'show quality' job. It's not happening any time soon.

To me, exceptional means something fancy like pearl, candy apple, special graphics, or something similar that is out of the ordinary and requires a lot of work by a very good painter. A simple repaint is only about $4-5K in my area.

I run a collision repair shop with my family, and I'd quote you around 3k for a same color do-over, but changing the color and then body work (if needed) could totally charge you up double easily, especially if you like 2-tones. Paint is fairly inexpensive though, you can go with Shopline, but the clear coat is where you don't want to cheap out. We use Euroclear and that stuff lasts. We lifetime guarantee it!

If you're willing to put forth the work, you can get a quality paint job for under $5K. It is a LOT of work, though. Over a hundred hours of sanding , painting, assembly, etc. is typically required for a show-winning paint job on your typical used car.

Exceptional? $30,000 - $50,000 if you want a car looking like those award winners you see at the shows.

The actual painting is only a few hours (candy excluded). It's the prep labor and the labor to straighten out the job afterwards that costs money. Then again, quality exceptional paints aren't that cheap either.

Maybe pay a couple mexicans to key your car in a wal mart parking lot and take the loss that way. I guess you could get away with it somehow.....But then your insurance rates will go up. Mine did when I claimned two accidents that was not my fault.

Good job on the douchebag, dishonest and thieving friends you have. Better watch your back because you know they'll screw you over on the slightest whim...

This is the best answer so far. I have two friends who paint. Mainly low riders but their good. A good paint job that will include the door jams would cost you about $4,000. It depends on the shop too and who's doing the work. You have to be careful though. Some shops will charge you the entire labor fees but then take short cuts like using bondo magic on some dents instead of actually pulling or cutting depending on where the dent actually is.

I couldn't agree with you more. The scumbags and thieves that are often found in the import community are the exact reason that I left it for several years. I like the RX7 community because the people seem more mature and dedicated to the cars and racing, rather then the "scene".

Anyway, I have a beautiful blue 99 FD while i'm stationed here in Okinawa. I want to recreate the same one when I get back in the states, but that color wasn't sold on 93s. To save money I am looking at taking a black one and just repainting the exterior. Having a black engine bay would be perfectly acceptable to me and good way to save a some of money.

How Much Does A Car Paint Job Cost?

At very cheap places like MAACO, painting a car costs between $250 to $400. On average MAACO charges you 33% less than other dealerships and shops.
You may be asked to pay $1,000 to $2,000 depending on the type of your car and the paint job complexity at the Middle of the Road shops.
If changing and rebuilding some body parts involved, you may be asked to pay $4,000 to $8,000 in custom body shops.

I believe that to get the cheap-o Maaco price you have to do all of the removal of exterior parts and all of the masking and prepping yourself. Then they will sell you the low ball painting. Clear Coat not included. That's how they are able to legally advertise really low prices.

Always make sure you get specific specs in your quotes. Some less than ethical shops will give you a low quote and then hit you with "ups and extras" once you are committed. Extras like painting the door jams! (Had it happen to a friend.)
