Question Hi! I'm new here and I have a VW with a rotary turbo.

Hi! My name is Michael and I have an interesting project, not sure if this is the perfect place for me but here we are.

I have a 1966 VW Ghia that I have placed a 1991 13b turbo from an RX-7 and now I am starting to work out the engine management portion of the install and looking for advice as far as ECU, should I go stock or aftermarket? Has anyone done this before with a stock motor and turbo? Advice is greatly appreciated...

Hi Michael, welcome!

That sounds like a great project. My advise is based on doing a similar project in a sand rail. After removing all the unnecessary stock components, it was clear that a aftermarket ECU was needed. We chose a M2000 Adaptronic Wire-in ECU based on the features and price point.

If you have the budget and want the advanced features, I would recommend you take a look at Haltech, specifically the Nexus as it combines a PDM and ECU. This makes wiring much simpler.

Have any photos?

Thanks for the pictures! It looks like a great project.
Something I forgot to mention, the right tuner is just as important as the right ECU. Look for a local tuner, or consider a remote tuner like TunedByShawn.
Good luck with your build!

crank triggered crankshaft angle input

Thank You soo much for the kind words! I am pretty stoked honestly... I have been looking for someone local for tuning help, usually I can handle my own stuff, but this is new territory... I have been looking at a FuelTech FT450 system, it looks pretty reasonable cost wise and comes with a touch screen display as part of the system so you can make adjustments "on the fly" I believe. I wonder if anyone has tried this system out... I am also looking at a crank trigger type of crankshaft angle input and wondered if anyone had tried this system out....

Killer, currently swapping/have swapped/doing body work and restoration now on an MG:

Initial fitment but before startup.

How it stands waiting for paint.

My setup is just using an old SM4 I had laying around from previous projects but I wire up these rigs for a living if you'd like some help. Feel free to PM me or we can just chat here if you have questions.

welcome to the board.

as stated earlier, there's nothing there to be embarrassed about. this is a very cool project, and i can't wait to see it come together.

i've seen a number of builds on this board use the FFE ignition setup, i don't know if any problems have been reported about them though. for the EMS, your tuner should be a factor, but i think Haltech is a fairly safe choice..of course, there are others that are probably just as good - maybe even better - but i think they are worth a look.
