SC Help Please

Hi I am a new member to this forum. Been reading it for a while now but anyway i need help!!!

I have a 90 convertible and sitting at idle the temp runs at a hair above a 1/4 on temp gauge. When I start driving it goes to a hair below half way and with ac on its dead on half. Why would it run at a 1/4 of the way while sitting still could it be the fan clutch or water pump, I dont see how the thermostat could cause that. What should I do.

could be the fan clutch but if it's not climbing above the half way mark ur fine. the 1/4 to 1/2 mark is normal. where in sc?

Perhaps there is no thermostat installed.

the fan provides air passing through the radiator but when movin the air passing through is ALOT MORE. hence why the guage reads slightly lower than at idle.

a radiator radiates away the heat to the passing air, more air passing (like driving down the road) = more air passing = slightly better cooling.
but the thermostat opens/closes at a certain temp, so then again maybe the ecu thinks its seeing correct coolant temps when they are slightly off. . . .
like stated above, as long as it doesnt go over 1/2 way its not a big worry.

It sounds like there is no thermostat in this car, or the thermostat has locked open.

Thanks for the info guys. Ill start with the thermostat and then move on from there if thats not it its just aggervating because if its running really cool then when i run the ac it causes the rpms to pulse. but when it runs half way it idles normal with the ac on. thanks again and ill keep u posted after i change the thermostat.

Got it fixed

Thanks guys for the info. I finally got the thermostat changed. Sorry it took so long but Mazda had to order it (wanted mazda oem). 24 frekin dollars. But anyway the temp is more consistent it still rises a little with the ac but thats ok its not as drastic. So here is what was wrong someone put the wrong thermo. in it. its supposed to have a 192 or 195. someone put a 180 in it.
Thanks again.

Don't always believe what people tell you--including supposed technicians. Always consult the factory service manuals. Here is what the manual says about OEM thermostat. It is a "182 degree" thermostat.

Manuals are free for the download at:

O'Reilly auto parts is your friend.
The one where I live has had everything I needed the day I needed it.
As far as price, somethings are a tad high but I never paid $24 for a thermostat.

I know the thermo i pulled out said 180 or 182 on it and the one from mazda didnt have anything on it so I dont know, but it fixed the problem so maybe the one that was in it was just bad. it wasnt stuck open or shut though.
