Angry have one engine rebuild question

why are oil control rings so expensive?

its not that i want them too be dirt cheap i wouldnt mind spending 100-150
its just too me 300 just seems a little to excessive

does anyone know where i can get some for a less than 300?

i want to rebuild my engine using as many new pieces that i can. but also not throw loads of cash away for an non turbo engine

They are expensive because they are. It's a low volume part, made by only one manufacturer.

Often you can just reuse the metal carriers. As long as they are not physically damaged in some way or worn to the point they are loose. Just replace the rubber o-rings inside.

Atkins makes slightly cheaper rebuild kits which include the o-ring carriers. But the kits include Viton oil o-rings, which in my opinion suck (they are hard to install).

usually if it is smoking it is the o-rings....unless the iol control rings are excessively worn or craked..u wont know until u rip the motor apart..also what year motor?. ive had an issue w 2nd gen motors where the rear side housing cracks and leaks coolant into the rear rotor chamber.

not to common.

Is the smoke blue or white?

White = Coolant

Blue = Oil

There's no such thing as a j-spec NA engine.

Are you loosing coolant? Does the smoke smell sweet?

Unhappy

if its white it definitely sounds like coolant and it could be that the rotor housing gaskets failed or the rear housing is cracked. i have rebiult between 20-30 motors n have had 3 of them w a cracked rear side housing,an 87,88, and a 94tt,so it can happen. god luck to you
