Gas Mileage Sucks

My daughter's '84 GSL is getting like 10 miles to the gallon. It has an automatic...which doesn't help. Drives only a couple miles each way to school. Any ideas why so bad?
Thanks

Restricted exhaust (old cats), carb that needs to be rebuilt (big one), old plugs, dizzy cap and rotor, bad front end alignment and TIRES. I went from 18.34 mpg to 19.39 on new tires alone...stock 185/70/13's...

Oh my....it's his little girl...how could she possibly do anything wrong? I know my little angel can't.

one car length behind an 18-wheeler....you'll trade the occasional chip in the windshield every two years or so but pick up about 10% in improved mileage as documented on Mythbusters. But you saw it on TV and didn't read it here.

You got that right! She can do no wrong....have not taught her how to fill the tank exactly the same so now we have better numbers - around town it's getting about 16 which is not far off the sticker estimate when it was new....thanks folks for the tips though!

It's an 84 GSL. It's got a carbed 12a, no turbo.

I think he meant a vacuum gauge. But it all went downhill from there. Zero on the gauge would then indicate wide open throttle, unless I'm mistaken.
