Neat, except he was asking about it without using flame kits.

With my n/a with no cats, air pump, or ACV, I can get pretty big ones by revving to 5-6000 RPM then slamming the throttle closed then kicking it open again for a second.

Don't straight pipe it, it's loud and annoying. Just eliminating the cats is enough.

I have figured out how to do it on a turbo 13b.

I discovered this driving a dunebuggy at night by accident. So I was having a ball driving through the desert in Glamis. My passengers in the back seat noticed the back of the car lighting up bright after I gave the car full throttle and buzzed up to anything above 6000rpm and would let off the throttle. It was shooting 4 to 7 foot flames as soon as I let off the gas. It looked pretty damn cool to me and my friends. The BLM Ranger at oldsmobile hill didn't really think so and pulled me over and gave me a ration of crap. Why? How? Well simple answer was I had a blown turbo gasket from in between the turbo and the exhaust coming from the engine. See since the the injectors are flowing so much fuel at WOT and when you slap the throttle shut. There is a delay in response and there is a bit of left over fuel your engine simply cant burn with out the AIR and simply goes out the exhaust. Combine that with a glowing red hot turbo hot side and all you need is the OXYGEN for it to ignite all on its own. Cool part is it simply burns its self out when the excess fuel is gone. Like 3 to 5 seconds in my case. So if you have a turbo motor with a decent amount of fuel in the fuel map. Then either a blown turbo gasket like in my case as the air gets sucked in on its own. Or better weld a small valve or cutout flapper deal you can operate by a switch if want. Or go the cheap route with a cable one going into your driver area. Then if you want flames its as simple as when ever you step on it hard and then as you let off cracking that valve open a tad for flames. If you leave it shut, no air = no flames.

Word of warning though. Make sure you you don't crack it open too much cause you will not only get flames but also a big POP! or backfire! Learned this as after a few good backfires I stopped got out of the buggy to learn that the turbo and muffler were about to fall off due to very loose bolts and really a bad mounting setup. Man the car had no power too without any boost from the turbo.

Also you should check if all your fuel connections are tight and there is no leaks. And be sure where your exhaust exit is safe! Like away from your car or fuel tank preferably!

Flames are a byproduct of a poorly tuned car. A properly tuned car will hardly ever throw flames at anything but wide open throttle and full boost.

well said aaron. backfiring (though maybe cool looking) is the product of mis-tuning or poor tuning.

Take out the dash pot on the back of the throttle body and hold open the primary throttle butterfly with a small bolt.. Youl pop flame and have the car run like ****!
I did that when I did the tb mod.. It backfired on every shift.. Part thottle when I let off the gas..

Or just tune your tps way out.. That will do it

Enjoy

i like the idea of flames, but im not too sure about making it drive even worse.... my car isn't in the best of shape, it has only driven like 20 miles in the past 7 years.... i have just fixed the alternator, clutch master and slave, antifreeze, i regrounded everything, windshield wipers, shifter bushing, several plastic trim peices, it still needs a new exhaust (which is in more than one peice and many holes) and the rear struts, which if i take off too fast, will let the car jump off the ground, it needs a windshield and a blinker bulb.... hell of a list, and i believe it will break even more than that, but once im done fixing everything, i bet the engine will blow ha ha ha also im having problems with it running hot.... ill prolly end up putting in a thermostat, and radiator, and flushing the entire system..... i was just interested on what would happen in a stock car with strait pipe... and maybe an intake.... matter of fact ill go check to see if i can find something with some flames

My 7 was having problems after I removed the 5th and 6th ports I also removed the bac valve... when I did the car had hard time idleing.. So I used to small bolts to crack open the thottle plates... I did it on the primary .. It was horrible... idled at 2 grand.. Back fire on every shift.. Part throttle backfireing... got really annoying after the first 5 minutes of driving.. Push in the clutch back fire...

I ended up useing it only on the secondarys since its not tps related.. And gave the tps a tune no more back fireing only under WOT and some times not even then...

question.... what if i take just 2 of the 3 cats out? my exhaust man wont take out all 3, he wants to leave the pre cat on, and take the 2 rear ones out......... would the car still do it?... it being a pos already..... and earlier, i forgot to add, fuel pump and fuel filter... which was the first thing, then they both failed, so i had the tank cleaned, put another pump and filter on, and refilled with good gas, ha ha now it actually runs fairly well i guess ( first time driving one), and the tach doesn't work either... so i can't tell where to shift at... never heard a buzzer yet, except when a heater hose blew and the coolant buzzer went off.... soo, yeah how bout them cats?btw my car is already missing the mufflers, but still has all 3 cats, with straitpipes where the mufflers should be... not to mention the coat hangers holdin up the exhaust.... im fixin that on WED, anything i should know about the exhaust before i let the guy hack away at it?, this is his first rx 7 also, he knows less than me about them! and i dont know much

GET A NEW MECHANIC!!!

I hardly let anyone touch my car besides me and when I have to I choose someone with ROTARY EXPERIENCE!!

Leaving only one precat is completely useless. The precats only do anything when the engine is cold, so once the car is warmed up, doesn't do much at all.

Moral of the story: find someone else to do your work.
