This FD needs some love

Hello everyone,

I just received my FD3S from Japan. It is a 1997 Model Type RB with 135.000 km.
First of all the engine runs very good on the first look! I think this is not the first engine, but I have no documents to prove it.
The car was repainted black in Japan. It is not the best work but it is ok. They also painted the engine bay and the entry, so it is fine.

There are some other stuff which have to replace but overall I think it is good platform for a start
I already ordert a lot of stuff in Japan to get it fixed.
I was suprised that it has dual oil coolers and a TEIN suspension.

Yesterday I spend some time to check the car and I noticed two think that makes me curious.

1. The Tail lights seems to be not 100% in one line and there is a huge(?) gap between trunk and the mid light. Is that normal? (sorry for the dirt)

The light fits to their holders.

2. I found this HKS thing in the engine bay. The end is not connected to anything. What is this?

Finally some pictures from Japan

Best regards,
Moe

Hey
Good find, it looks good !
The hose+HKS valve, I think it may be originally connected to the air pump, but I'm not sure. Can you show me where it is connected exactly ?
For the tail lights, I don't really see the 'huge' gap, I think I've got the same on mine.
How is it in Germany for Japan imports ? Do you have procedures in order to register the car and get your Fahrzeugschein ? Here in France it's pretty difficult and boring, ton of papers and tests (costs almost 5k €...)

Hey,
thank you! Hopefully there are no bad suprises

I made a picture yesterday from the point, where it starts. Maybe I can make a better one later.

Its directly behind the engine (looking front to back).

For the tail lights, I don't really see the 'huge' gap, I think I've got the same on mine.
I realised that its needed to open the trunk...

It is similar. You have to use EU tested lights and get a fog back light. There are some specialist who doing all the paperwork and TÜV stuff for you. I am calculationg with 2000+€ without parts.

Best regards,
Moe

ok, well this hose is connected directly to the air box, and IIRC is coming from under the UIM... but I don't remember its function

Thank you anyways!
Are there JDM FD manual/service manuals available somewhere? I just found a PDF version for USDM < 1995.

I would like to change the steering wheel, to one later Nardi air bag version.

Is the Airbag for the steering wheel 99 version and 00 version exchangeable? I like that Nardi logo a lot more than the big Mazda one.
I found the Thread but it ends 2008

I'd imagine it is, since both are a series 8 and the wheels look to have the same dimension airbag in that thread, I can measure the one in my Spirit R the weekend and if someone as a 99 version they could confirm they are the same

Thanks for your reply!
I just discovered that it is not allowed to only ship the airbag in germany. But the wheel with airbag seems to be fine

Anyways I found a very nice one on eBay.
But this might be also interessting for other people. I can measure it wheel, when I got it.

1- you're missing the small plastic triangles that cover over the tail light screws and hide the openings. the truck seem gap to tail light when closed is normal
2- that HKS hose is for the airpump outlet. look on the back left side and you will see where it is supposed to connect
3- all FD wheels use the same connection and signal pin holes

Sorry for my late reply!
The airpump outlet was a very good hint. I made some research and tried to understand the airflow.

Can you guys recommend any SMIC which fits in the OEM holes. The only Kit I found is the KNIGHT SPORTS SUPER U TYPE III TWIN-CORE. Unfortunately, it is only available in Japan and it is very expensive.
I also want to upgrade my radiator. So, in this price range it might be clever to go directly to a V Mount Kit.

Are there any nice Kits available, which are nearly "Plug&Play"?

What are your thoughts about it?
