Post vehicle info. Year/model, mods, etc...

Don't mess with the timing. Use a timing light to return the CAS to the proper orientation. The timing may have been off in the first place, which is a potential cause for a glowing exhaust system.

Check for spark. You probably lost your leading ignition. Easiest place to start looking...

You could also be starting to lose compression. Don't forget to check that when you have the spark plugs out and pay special attention to any rich running condition. I also suggest you get some block off plates.

Many times the cats will build up heat and even glow if they are old and starting to flow badly. Once they start to plug up.

Would have to agree with the cat being pluged or at least resricted, ive seen it before and would def affect the performance

NJ exhaust temps still way too hot

i have a 90 gtu stock engine its been sitting for 5 months, in between these 5 months ive replaced the oil pan gasket and the front cover gasket, eccentric seal water pump gasket , spark plugs o2sensor, when i started it up the cats strarted getting so hot they were cherry red, i figured the cat was clogged, replaced the cats start it up and the exhaust starts to glow when it gets to operating temp so i rechecked my timing and its good. all i can think now is the gas could be bad. any other ideas i cant find anything on this??

It's not a surprise if you have leaky fuel injectors. Besides that, check compression on the engine, it could just be an old engine and not burning efficiently like mine : )

Extremely lean mixtures will make exhaust temp high (vac. leak = no steady idle), but the more common one is excess fuel mixing in the cat.

NJ Still running lean

90 fc gtu 6 port. the car has been sitting for a while due to money issues but it sat after i put a new oil pan gasket and front cover gaket the exhaust started to glow red after i started it up originaly. usually that indicates a lean condition. so i rechecked timing with a light, new o2 sensor plugs wires drained all the old gas out and instaled a new fuel filter, the car starts up but is hesitant. i am starting to think its the fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator, but idk how to test the fpr. so how does one test a fpr?

A glowing exhaust at idle is more likely to be messed up timing or plugged cats. How did you check it with the timing light? Was idle speed under 1000 RPM, and did the marks line up?

NJ Maybe the tps sensor?

so my 90 gtu has been running lean, ive changed plugs wires o2 sensor fuel filter just replaced cats cause i thought they were clogged. they started glowing red hot, put the new ones on and im getting the same high temp exhaust, ive verified timing and its still glowing a little i know i have propper fuel pressure from the pump, im getting some afterburn and im wondering if an out of spec tps could have anything to do with it. any idead ive been stuck with this problem for a litle while now
