I have an oil leak in my SA. 40 years of grease and grime is making it really hard to pinpoint the issue, plus I've wanted to clean the engine bay up since I got it. So my question is, how do I go about this without totally ******* my car up? I've never cleaned an engine before and I'd like to hear what you guys find to be the best way to approach it. I was thinking of covering up the alternator and wires and spraying it all with a diluted degreaser, letting it sit, then spraying it off. Is this a safe/effective way to go about it? Thanks in advance for any advice or help.

 

cover the alternator with a plastic bag and maybe your coils, grab yourself some cans of 'Gunk engine brite' or heavy de-greaser and spray the heck out of it then blasting it off with a pressure washer. repeat you can even use scrub brushes or anything else and get creative. keep in mind that engine bay was designed to get wet. i like to use compressed air and a leaf blower to full dry it out after. good luck you'll love the result.
