I am looking for a company that sells electronic ignition system for a 1979 RX-7? I want to switch points to electronic. I purchased the one I have from GEREX 30 yrs ago. It has stopped working.
what are the needed components? Distributor, electronic ignition module, what? I am not a gear head, and don't know the lingo. I bought this car when I was in college in 1979, actually a 78 and a half,# 741 on the production line. I had the engine rebuilt by RX-7 World in N.C. Supposed to run 1500 rpm all day, but the points keep frying. Need a fix for that figured an electronic ignition would help. Will it? I have a distributor, auto transmission, doors, glass hatch from a 1982 model, but that is it. I also have a 1981 model, but I really want to get the 79 straightened out. HELP!
the only needed components is the electronic dist and the coils from a s2 or s3 rx7. the dist will have the j109 ignitors mounted to it. if u keep "frying" points, there's something else wrong. a properly adjusted set of points should last for thousands of miles. how often do u have to change them?
where can you buy the coils, any parts store? I can have the dist rebuilt. Is the wiring different? I have a gen 2 dist. Points are new. It is a newly rebuilt engine just breaking it in. Rebuilt by RX-7 World. Have not taken it past 10,000 rpm yet. we will see if the points can take it. Supposed to go to 15,000 easily so the rebuilder say's. we will see when it's broken in? Garry W
Yes, 15,000 RPM. looking to put an electronic ignition my 1978 and a half,/1979 RX-7 I have owned the car since it was new, bought it in college, and I have a distributor from a 1982 RX-7, do you know if that's all I need?
Um, a stock-ish street motor with accessories isn't going to turn 15k and hold together under any circumstances. My brother runs a turbo peripheral port in his bracket car and shifts it at 10,800 rpm, because that's where the power peaks. Says non-turbo PP cars shift at 10k. He needs an aftermarket cooling setup and no alternator because the stock-type parts can't handle those speeds. You really shouldn't take your motor past about 7k with stock ports. Unless you have a full race motor with a large port job (big 4-port/ monster port or peripheral porting) you are going to kill your car turning 10k, and the shop-claimed 15k is ridiculous.
As rxtasy3 said, I think all you need is a later distributor and coils. Say, '81 to '85 I think. Not 100% when they left the antique points type. I've only had '85's.

It was running 8.9@155mph a few years ago on the "small" 80mm turbo. New build has a 91mm I think (93mm?). We'll see how it does this season.
But anyway, that is an 11k rpm motor. Your car won't run 10k for long, and definitely can't turn 15k. I'm not knocking your car. Someone just gave you bad info.
