dripping oil

dripping oil
when the car sits and idles for a bit she leaked some oil. I read up on this but not sure if this is true or not. The rotory motor does not like synthetic oil and may leak if used from the oil pan. Is this true?? It is not a lot of oil maybe two drops and that was about it. So should I be worried?

Not true. Synthetic is fine.
If the oil drips regardless of whether the car is running, then the oil pan is a likely suspect. Oil pan leaks are common especially if it was not sealed up correctly when reinstalled.
I use a skim coat of RTV on each side of the gasket and add washers to the bolts to spread out the load. Only torque to about 10 Ft-LBs in two steps.

I was told to stay away from a synthetic oils due to that they do no burn as well as mineral oils and can leave a residue in your engine. the oil I understand for Rotory motors is used to help lubricat the apex seals and the used oil gets burned up in combustion. I did not find any oil in the coolant reservior so i know the internal engine does not have a leak.

It could also be leaking from your oil pan drain plug... a lot of times when people change the oil they don't put on a new crush washer so it ends up leaking from there.
There is a lot of discussion on Synthetic oils in rotaries btw. What Aaron Cake says is true. Personally, I don't like to use synthetic because dollar for dollar just isn't practical to use in an engine that eats oil and has you change it out more frequently than other engines.

the oil is coming off of the what looked to be a lower cross member. I really could not get a great look under it yet untill I get it up on stands. I am interseted in this oil pan leak since you guys say it is common. Would it be common for the car to have 38,000 original miles on it have this problem?

A common misconception from people that don't understand rotary engines and are looking to point a finger somewhere besides at their inability to rebuild a rotary engine that can last.

I have printed out a 4 page summery of what to look for in purchasing an Rx-7. The Oil in coolint is not a good thing. watch the temp gauge because over heating one is the worst thing you can do to it and it destroys the gaskets. Smoking when starting is not a bad thing cuz it is designed to do it and can burn about 1/2 quart of oil between changes. there is others but not going that far and I am nowhere near rebuilding a motor at all. Had a Crx with a b20 swap and a Sentra Ser with a 2r20det swap in it and just want to get out of rebuilding something. The Rx will be stock for some time.

It's common for an FD to break a lot of stuff before 38,000 miles.
A common leak point are the engine mounts as they go through the rear of the oil pan. The gaskets are poor from the factory and the pan tends to deform around the holes.
