Distributor Positioning

bought the car with a random distributor position, ran rough lol
can i just skip it tooth by tooth until i find what runs best, then snug the bolt and fine tune from there?
or am i going to cause damage by doing this shot in the dark method?

im still working on decontaminating the fuel system....
there was a good quarter inch of black goo in the bottom of the tank, some rust n **** too, il check filters often until i think the tank is clean.
i did steam clean it but didnt get 100% tank surface cause of baffles n stuff.
i really hope the injectors will be alright :S

This thread shows how to set the dist right. Just make sure the engine is at top dead center before you put the distributor in.

thanks opeth

almost have the fuel tank reinstalled, i broke the hose lead off the unit in the middle top of the tank, got that fixed now too, i used a metal sleeve and epoxy, its very thin lets hope it still acts right as i may have changed the flow with this fix.

another question on the distributor, once i get it close and put the bolt in loose, can i fine tune it from there while its running? or am i gonna get shocked? i hate electrical shocks.

ahh right on thats what ive been searching for.
the engine is all strapped togather though, i hope theres an easier way to find TDC.
i guess theres not much to it, il have to suck it up.

found it

Once the dist is lined up and installed you can turn it while the engine is running to set the timing.
