they run off back pressure. open and close depending on pressure. if they dont open your on 4 ports if they do open your running on 6.

theres a pick up tube coming from the exhuast to the actuators. you can simply wire them open if you do not have enough back pressure as many people do. do a search on it

the quik and easy fix is to wire them open. u might get a little less MPG and less power down in the lower RPM range but thats the only down sides

you would have less power if they were only 4 ports. it wouldnt be bad down low but in the high rpm range you would feel a difference

dont wire them open. if they are not working fix it. wiring them open is bad. there are other alteratives.
http://www.rotaryresurrection.com/2n...elec6port.html if you dont want to use the exhaust pressure this will work

how is wiring them open bad? it might not be the BEST solution. but it is in no way "bad" by any means.

When I replaced my cat I had to use WD40 to free a nut, and it smoked for 10-12 minutes. If you used a ton, it will probably go for longer (and smell like all horrible hell ), if it sounds good I'd let it go and see.

Wiring the ports open is not a good solution. Your performance will suffer.
You can get a high flow cat with an air pipe for exactly this issue. The Racing Beat cat comes to mind. Then you can get the performance of a free flowing exhaust, still meet emissions, and have use of your aux ports.

so here's a nice summary for you.

-wiring them open will hurt your bottom end power, but won't ruin the engine
-electric port opening is a good alternative that is cheap, but more technically complicated
-racing beat does offer a cat replacement pipe/presilencer combo that has a backpressure tube that will allow your ports to operate correctly. This is very easy, but costs significantly more.

well i kinda got another proublem that just happened. there is oil in the exhaust and a pretty good amount of it. i went through bout a quart. is it the oil seal and is it time for a rebuild. and im going to try to put some luckaus oil in today and see if it stops the smoke and everything. but im jus going to wire the ports open for now because like rx7 all night said im not going to be really driving under 3000 rpms that much

If you are actually getting oil in the exhaust and going through that much, there is no cure but to rebuild the engine.

I in the same process here. Since I'm replacing me header with RB Roadrace, I wont have the back pressure for the actuators. So I'm leaning towards a manual boost controller, connected on the air pump.

how would that work? im thinking bout wire them open and see what happens. then come try to hook it up to my air pump but dont know how i would do that. i found a vacuum line on the intake manifold and im going to try to hook it up there and see if there is enouph back pressure for the actuators

Pretty simple, most turbo guys knows how! On the air pump hose install a T inline with a 1/8 outlet for the manual boost controller. Connect the output of the MBC into the actuators, then set the controller on a certain PSI @ 3600 RPM which is partially open and wide open beyond.
