COMPLETE NEWB. Possibly buying a 94 rx7 today

Well. Last summer I sold my 400rwhp e36 M3. I miss that car very much but financial situations caused me to sell my car.

I have been sreaching for a few months now, and I always admired the rx7 shape. My friend has a single turbo one and it is insane quick. I never really got indetails on his mod list but it goes.

His shop knows a guy selling a 94 Mazda RX7 twin turbo with 172k on it. The guy also said that the engine was rebuilt by preivous owner around 15k ago. I got the car and the vin checked out. No salvage or anything like that.

I am a complete newb to the rotary engines, And since this guy has not documentation to prove the engine rebuild I can only imagine that it has not been rebuilt.

It burns oil, very light white some, (I heard it was norma). I read a few "buying a used RX7" articals.

The issues that i know of,
passenger window switch needs replacement,
The key was broken into the switch so it starts with a screwdriver,
shocks seem bad, bumpy ride.

I went for a test drive and the car is disgusting quick. I lost traction in 2nd gear.

I know there will be flaming, so flame suit on....lol

He cut me a deal since he knows the shop and told me 6k so he can put a big down payment on his new house.

I want to know ur input.!! The radiotor has been upgraded along with a few little mods like FMIC and clutch. It also has a boost controler.. thanks for the help. . I will possible buy it today around 6.

well i can try to help: the ride was bumpy because of the stiff suspension on these cars and all rotaries burn oil i think its like 1qt every1-3000 miles i dont remember exactly but that smoke has me worried because the only smoke you should see is from the tires.

That smoke scares me if he did in fact have the engine rebuilt. MAYBE if all emissions were removed I can see it but even then....

I recommend you take it to a rotary shop and get it checked out independently. You will want to be sure the engine coolant seals are good and compression is good.

A little smoke isn't much to worry about because RX7s do tend to create a little smoke sometimes. I also hope you have a way of getting your Cali inspection - it sounds like the kind of car that needs a few $20's to pass.

do a compression test... they need to all be within 21psi at maximum of each other and should be around 100

I realize this is from 2 days ago, but I think I know this car. If it is in Silver Spring, MD, I looked at the car and had it PPI'd at PFS 2 weeks ago. Things that came from the PPI:

1. Compression on lower end of spectrum
2. Needs rear control arm bushings
3. Front Wheel bearings need adjusted or replaced
4. Leaks from engine/tranny
5. Subframe for engine from junkyard
6. Coolant overflow bottle cracked
7. Non-sequential turbos
8. No front sway bar
9. Fuse block exposed to elements in front of FMIC
10. Missing fender liner(s), allowing electrical wire coatings to wear off

Other observations that I made:

1. Bumper ziptied on
2. Abnormal wear on passenger front tire
3. Driver's exterior door handle broken
4. Car was run with little/no coolant due to leaking AST delete block off nipple
5. Coolant sucked into filters/turbos, due to leaking block off
6. Drivers door compartment missing lid (sitting behind driver's seat)

That is all I can remember, and this may not be the car you looked at. If it is I hope you make an informed decision. Good luck

I had an e36, but decided rx7 all the way, not a hard choice.
