can i get away with taking away the steering lock?

I lost my key and my rx7 has been down for months before i lost the key....well im moving into another house and the rx7 can be towed there, but a new ignition lock costs $250 with keys. The problem is i don't have the money right now because ive been putting it off. Can i get away with taking away the steering lock or the ignition lock so i can tow my rx7 on the flatbed and get it to my house? the steering wheel is locked about 10 degrees to the left btw...that's why i need to be able to move the steering wheel so i can get it towed on the flatbed

Either call a locksmith and have him come to your house and cut a key for it, or remove the lock cylinder and take it in to a shop. Call around to get a price, but it should be a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a new lock cylinder and key set.

Another option would be to call a dealer and see what they want to cut a key from your VIN number. Most of them around here will do it for about $10

I think the best option is to go to the dealer for another key as mentioned above. You will eventually want one for the doors anyway, so you may as well just get one now.

However, to answer your question, yes, you can remove the steering lock. In order to do that you will need to unhook the battery, remove the steering wheel with a puller tool (do NOT use a hammer!), remove the plastic trim around the steering wheel (which usually cracks when you do this), remove the two ignition lock bolts (by staking them or slotting them with a Dremel so you can remove them with a standard screwdriver, or by using a needle-nose vice grip to grasp and turn them), remove the ignition key lock assembly, and then you can remove the square locking lug. You will need to buy two new screws if you want to put your lock back together.

Ah, forgot about the dealer option. That is definitely where I would start.

Good call Akagis_white_comet

hi my brother own a 85 gsl and he called the mazda dealership and they said his car is so old they wont have a data base on the code for his key for his vin code? are they just full of **** or should we just go in to the dealer ship and talk to one of the parts guys? and the previous owner, his girlfrined flushed the rx7 keys in the toilet so he hooked the ignition up to a toggle switch and has the steering column unlocked at all times. would this pass inspection like this?
