Another transmission noise thread

I searched through previous post and could not find anything identical to what I am experiencing. I have a metallic noise while at idle clutch pedal out, clutch pedal in noise is gone. While driving only in 1st 2nd & 3rd is there a loud metallic noise. No noise in 4th 5th or Reverse. I assume it is an internal issue. I have contacted few transmission shops in my local area and most do not want to open it due to poor parts availability. I have one that said yes they would look at it but I do not think they realize the parts issue. I am also on the fence of just purchasing a Pettit "blueprinted" transmission. Any input or advice is welcome. Thanks.

At idle or at speed, with your foot not on the clutch, your throw out bearing itself, is not engaged or doing anything. Only when you depress the pedal, does it turn once it comes in contact with the fingers on the clutch. Doesn't mean that something isn't out of place and rubbing inside the bell housing that goes away when you depress the clutch. I'd think that the noise would be present in all gears though, not just selected ones.

Does the noise change with engine RPM or actual vehicle speed? You may need to drop the tranny and have a look.

The noise is more evident with vehicle speed but is present with engine rpm. I had it on lift and could hear it. So I assume more evident with a load. I think it’s internal. Hard to find a local place to have crack at it.

I don’t think so since it’s not at all times. But seems like the transmission will have to be pulled so worth a look anyways.

Usually it's one of two things, the throw out bearing like people have mentioned previously or the metal sleeve that covers the input shaft that the throw out bearing rides on when the clutch is depressed has snapped off.

You'll need to take the gearbox out to replace it. To check, get underneath and remove the inspection plate on the bottom of the bell housing and poke a screwdriver up into it. If you can move it by pushing it up and down with the screw driver then that's the culprit.

I ended up taking it to a transmission shop. End result was bearings in transmission were bad. Been driving it the last 2 weeks after repairs with no issues.
