Question Transmission noise

Have a rotating grinding/squealing noise in first, second, and third gear when letting off the accelerator. Also when in reverse with clutch engaged. Noise goes away when I engage the clutch. Anyone have any ideas.

If the noise is only when you have the clutch pedal pushed in, then it's the throughout bearing. Could also be the pilot bearing if the noise changes with the RPM's.

Noise is when backing off accelerator during driving conditions. Clutch is not pushed in. Error in my original post. Clutch is not pushed in for all conditions. Thanks for the reply.

Sounds like it could be the gear noise or possibly synchronizers - on deceleration, this puts the load against the backside of the gear teeth, which sounds different than when under acceleration. If you have lash problems like that, though, you should hear it during acceleration as well - could be the exhaust is too loud to hear it on acceleration.

I'd suggest draining and filling your tranny with some good gear oil - 90w that meets GL specifications. I prefer the purple stuff (forget the name), but just about any gear lube should work just fine. This will likely fix the problem very quickly. HTH,

billgo, I have the same noise it sounds like. Does it stop when you push in the clutch.

I gonna try changing the tranny fluid and see if it works.

should i get the real expensive redline fluid, or just the cheap stuff to get rid of the noise(if fluid is going to help)?

Took my baby to the tranny shop today and had it put on a rack. started her up and did a sound check. Noise is coming from front u-joint. Going to order a drive shaft Monday from Mazdatrix. Mazdatrix offers both a OEM driveshaft w/fixed u-joints and a driveshaft w/replaceable u-joints. Going to order the one w/replaceable joints. This will give my RX-7 a new clutch, remanuf tranny and new driveshaft. Worth the effort since she has given over 271,000 miles of pleasure. Might as well start thinking about a new differential. Once again thanks for your replys.
