GA another exhaust thread

I dont have alot of money right now, but what can i do to my exhaust that i could gain somemore hp? Without buying a whole 6 to 1000 cat back exhaust system. Would a 2 to 1 pacesetter header be a good upgrade and will it work on the stock exhaust? Would gutting my cats gain anything? Or just removing them and go with straight pipe? And how about stock piping with just better mufflers and what muffler is a good non restrictive muffler thats not that expensive and isnt extremely too loud? Thanks for any help.

Do you mean a header to straight pipe with no muffler? What kind of hp gain could I get with that setup and will it throw a code and put my ecu into limp mode? Thanks.

perhaps it might also be helpful to post how much money you DO have set aside for this project. depending on your answer, unfortunately, waiting might be your best move.

The whole exhaust doesnt "look" bad, so to speak. As if it were replaced sometime in its 21 year history. So you think i should at least just remove the cats? Does that include the precats as well or just the main? Thanks.

Gutting the two pre-cats is the best mod you can do for an NA. It's free, and will give you probably 3-5 hp... which is quite a lot considering some exhaust only give you 5hp and it costs $1000.

2.5 straight pipe into a custom muffler. always worked for me and the throttle response with a gutted cat is amazing!

So instead of going out from 2 to 1 then back to 2, are you talking about going straight pipe into 1 muffler and getting rid of the other?

straight pipe NA rotors are really annoyingly loud...i ran a no cat to a custom muffler(magnaflow) to a cheapy rice can with a silencer it was nice and quiet with the silence but had too much back pressure..without crisp response and reved to whenever..but too loud

Last January Karack tuned a straight pipe catless (for race only) FC here in the Bay. SmogSux, yours truly, and the rest of us rotaryheads were outside, around the corner from the shop, covering our ears, and it was still unbearable, and I'm sure we all got gas poisoning that day. < Proof is I remember calling my ex-girlfriend that night

It would help to get new "OEM" Magnaflows welded in place of your stock 21-year-old cats. Chances are you'll save some weight, and it's very likely you'll flow better, lower all temperatures across the board and not have a car that smells like a gas station.

It was $200 total (labor and cat) at my local exhaust shop for my FD and took 30 minutes (Golden Auto in Daly City), although it might be slightly more for your FC (two cats?). It'll be worth it in better mileage and a cooler engine.

^Aforementioned straight exhaust FC...

This car was out-of-this world LOUD. I can't believe I stood next to it long enough to capture the vid. The sound waves/exhaust pulses were so violent that my *new* camera couldn't hold a clear focus. Absolutely insane.

This one deserves its own post SmogSux's FC being tuned by Karack.

Should've brought some hot links so we could all have some cancerdogs

Here is one of my FCs. Stock exhaust manifold, gutted pre-cats, stock main cat, full muffler shop made cat back 2.5" to magna flow muffler.

Howd that turn out for you funkjaw? You only gutted the precat and not the main? The magna flow, did you run 2.5 back to one or two?

^ I posted a vid that you can watch.

I gutted the two precats, but left the main cat intact. It rant to a single magna flow.

Wish you a speedy recovery.

I can tell you this, I've had 8 fcs with many different exhaust setups from the non-turbos to the turbos.. and in my opinion, by far my favorite would have to be the oldschool racing beat RSR dual exhaust. I liked it so much, even though it was built for an NA, I had a shop swap it over to my turbo

Thanks funkjaw, appreciate that. Today will be my 2nd day back to work and im feeling alittle better than if i got run over by a dump truck. I looked at those racing beat exhausts. Unfortunatly there just not in my budget right now unfortunatly. Theres a sysytem on ebay which looks good, i tried to get the link to show you but i couldnt get it to paste, but it looks way to big as far as diameter and looks like to me it would kill all my needed backpressure. How long is a pacesetter header? They look pretty long. Does it bolt up to the Y-pipe or does it bolt to the precat? And if not that, how about just taking off the precat and regular cat, and replacing just that part with a piece of straightpipe? Would that work ok, or help in alittle hp I should say? I just figured that way instead of gutting them, i wouldnt ruin them in case i needed them later on down the road. And also how loud would it make it, im not really one for major noise these days, lol. Seeing how mines an s5 and the 6th port actuators work off the airpump, they would work fine right, unlike the s4 that works off the exhaust? Thanks for all your help. I'm getting close to trying something here, even if its temporary till i come up with with some money and a better plan.
