There is a nut that's pressed into the plastic that the upper bolts thread into. Often times the nuts will spin when they no longer hold in the plastic. You can apply some gentle upward pressure between the lid and the lower portion where the air filter sits to see if it will grab when attempting to remove the bolt. Sometimes that works and sometimes it does not. Sometimes the nut will come out still attached to the bolt. The nut is cylindrical with a knurled edge. Often times you wind up having to replace the airbag assembly.

The stock system is actually pretty good. It uses a duct that runs along the top of the fan shroud that draws fresh air into the air box. This is is cooler than engine bay ambient air as with an open cone style filter. Better for volumetric efficiency, though quieter. I would personally order a replacement air box if you are unable to repair your current one.
