93 RX7 FD - Best no-modification radiator?
Hey guys-
I've got a 93 FD that has a fair bit of mileage on it, and its stock radiator is getting warm when I run the car consistently and not running at a certain mph to cool it down. So this means traffic jams and side roads are really keeping heat on my 7. Coolant is fine, no drippage, but the radiator just looks pretty old anyway.
I've been looking at a few radiators, like GodSpeed, Koyo, etc. But I need one that doesn't need a whole lot of fabrication. I'd really like something that bolts right in.
As for what performance measures it needs to meet, I've got a Cold Air intake, exhaust, downpipe, coolcharge intercooler, intercooler piping, silicon hoses all round,pettit rebuilt turbos (10psi) and pettit ecu. I don't plan on throwing any more power adders, rather just finishing the reliability mods.
SO I was hoping maybe someone can shed some light on the situation me. I've read about a few of the brands I mentioned, but I'm just wondering if there's something I'm missing!

Fluidyne is the radiator you want. A little more expensive than some but it fits w/o any issues at all.

Might want to also consider replacing your hoses. At this age, they do get hard and brittle and are susceptible to leaving you stranded. Get them from Ray at Malloy Mazda and order up some OEM hose clamps to go with it.

I went with a ron davis radiator. Should fit with little to no mods. I dont know because the car was rebuilt with a lot of mods. Mazda Speed used this so it is a real good radiator.
Whatever one you use dont get a mitsumoto radiator. Horrible fitment, no mounting tabs, no drain plug.

LoL don't go with the Ebay specials.
A lot of them don't even have a coolant drain plug on the bottom which makes it ridiculously messy to drain your coolant. Many don't have the AST nipple either.
I just got the 2nd of the 3 radiators from radiator world for the RX7 for a little over $200 new I think it was.
Havn't put it in yet (waiting for all my new coolant hoses) but it looks like it'll just drop right in no problem.

Alright, over the weekend I was able to tinker with it a bit. I had found out that my fuse for the cooling fans was blown, so I bought another. But, only one fan will turn on. The second fan crackles and makes a sound like it's grinding against the wires on the inside.
After driving around for a bit, it blew the new fuse, and I was fanless. As long as I'm hovering around 40-50ish, it stays pretty cool, but I guess that's an obvious thing to point out. Shall I try a new set of fans, or do you guys think I ought to just swap the whole rad out?
And, I spoke to a gentleman over craigslist about a JVTR Radiator, and he'd give me a pretty decent deal. 100 flat for it, no fans though. But, I haven't even heard of that brand, sounds more trouble than it's worth.
Labor Day tomorrow, most likely won't crack on that until Wednesday-ish. My MR2's starter is giving me trouble as well, and it's on the bottom of the car. So, I'll just have to play careful with the RX7. Yikes!

Don't bother with whatever radiator that is. Get one that fits and that you know the fans will work with. Otherwise, you'll be pissing away $100.
Sounds like that one fan motor is blown. Get a set of used fans here on the forum. Could also be the wiring shorting out against something. Take a look at the wires and make sure they aren't rubbing on something.

I went with a cheap, thick aluminum radiator on ebay (think it was CX Racing) and this required a lot modification to fit (fitting mounting brackets, shaving brackets for the fans to fit snug and missing AST nipple).
Not a problem for me, but I would definatley not recemmend this if you are looking for straight bolt-on with no fuss.

Sorry tho bump this old thread.
But i recently bought a second hand fluidyne radiator.
The rad. itself fits good and the fans fit fine.
But my standart airduct/ intercooler and battery tray wont fit. There isnt enough room.
Now i modified the rad a little and deleted the rubber bolds where its mounted on. And also cut some off the rubber off from the parts where it is sitting in.
now there is a little more room to fit everything back. But it doesnt have as much room as with the stock radiator.
Does anybody else got the same problems?

That's not to imply that my Fluidyne wasn't a good choice or another brand would have been any easier. It's been in for 9 years for my Fluidyne with absolute no issues. But it wasn't a "drop-in" modification.

But if it lowers more then there is not much room between the radiator and airco unit thats sitting under it.

And yes my airbox is also sitting on the coolant hose.... did you clear that?
I have a blitz intake that has to go in but that needs some work. So the next month i wanne drive with the standart airbox.

Ok thanks.
I took a look at it and if i give the airbox a little down pressure then i can get the bolts in.
It is not ideal but in a quik time i will have my blitz intake ready to go in and then there is room enough.

Well i think if you have an aftermarket ait intake and a aftermarket intercooler and you battery is in the boot. Then it sure is a drop in.
The rad itself fits very good. Rads fit perfect.
only the oem sh#t that comes on top of it makes it hard.
