The oil smell can be common. Check the function of the PCV system.

If the car is popping, then it may be running a bit rich which can also explain the oil smell. Find out when the last full tuneup was and if it has been a while, perform one.

Is the car stock? If parts of the emissions system have been removed or bypassed the popping will be the result.

You are getting the popping due to the exhaust.

I am assuming the exhaust has eliminated the cats. Without them, afterburn will be much more noticeable. Especially if the air pump is removed.

All the RX-7 tanks are baffled but if yours is sucking air under hard cornering, yours may have come loose.
