FL 88 rx7 possible electrical problem

Ok... just bought my first rx7. 88 se hatch. Weeellllllll it floods out . And I'm having problems with the leading coil pack. Car ran fine when I got it. Came home it was fine.. next day went to go reg. Her and as I was making sharp turn she kinda sputtered a bit and bout died in road. I got pulled over and was in idle for about 10 minutes then she just bogged down and died....I'm getting power to coil pack but no spark from it. So I got another coil pack.. doesn't work either. Odds are that both aren't bad. I rechecked power and I got it. Sooo car now isn't running and I wanna think its a ground issue. I tried another ecu and still didn't work. Can anyone help??

How are you checking for spark from the leading coil?

In what condition is the white 2 conductor plug? Are the pins damaged at all?

Run a continuity check back from that plug to the ECU while you wiggle all the wiring. If it checks out, then scope the signal from the ECU at the coil plug while the fault is happening.

Well I checked power while wiggling the wires i.. all I have is a test light .. broke chic stuck in apt lol. The light doesn't even flicker. Stays bright. I checked the coil and wires by placing against body. Of metal. I did the same with other coil pack.. other pack lit up this one did nothing. Its the one next to battery.

The coil pack it self was bad. And to top that there was water in the tank... tank was dropped and its full of rust and gunk. Cleaned it up and installing it tomorrow... poor baby was all kinds of miss treated.

Both coil assemblies were bad? How odd. The FC ignition system is actually very reliable. Stuff rarely fails.

Water in the take would certainly do it too. At the same time you have the tank out, make sure the baffles are still in place in the tank.

change out the Fuel sock on the fuel pump in the tank, and also replace the fuel filter.
It is located on the driver's side of the car,on the frame rail by the Starter and trans/engine area.

When I dropped tank I made sure everything was ok. Just had a lot of crap in there. I replaced fuel system. Pump strainer filter and one injector. Just to be safe. One injector was leaking...thank god for japanese people. It was super easy to drop the tank. I let it dry over night. Putting it back up this afternoon. And sorry thers no pictures up I'm doing all this from a mobile phone. And both leading coil pack. One on car and one from some guy were both bad. One from junkyard fired like amachine gun lol so now all left to do is reinstall and prime pump and go. Yay easy jdm easy builds

you didn't replace the fuel filter on the Car itself??.
also,it would be better to get the injectors Cleaned, professionally.

Since you have the injectors out, have them professionally serviced. You probably have a local shop (check the Yellow Pages under (injection) that can do the job. In may cases this cures flooding.

Ok once again both filter and injectors are newwwwwwwwwwwww. I had the car running and driving. It just randomly died when I turned a little sharp. This happened after all was replaced in fuel system because water. It also did this before I removed water n tank. So its nothing I did. I think I have a wiring issue that when I turn shorts out the spark or something....idk I'm going to make the electrical system

Sorry, I didn't quite follow the thread. Are they actually brand new injectors? That must not have been cheap. Just for future reference, you almost never have to buy new injectors. An injection shop can fix existing units in most cases for less then $30.

OK, so at the moment, do you have spark?

And do you have fuel?

Never use a testlight to check pcm's for power. You will probably fry it. Key rule of thumb. All you need is a voltmeter. It's safe and reliable.

Second, he said he was getting no power out of the coil.. How did this suddenly go to replacing fuel system componets..? I'm just a little confused. The Coils get power from the battery, then a signal from the PCM( which is checked by the CAS) Tells the coil when to fire off. Start from the basics. 12 volts before the coil with the key on. There is one wire for the leading coil coming from the pcm, with a volt meter back probing that wire ( At the coil) you should see a signal voltage. Most signal voltages vary from 0 to 5 volts. With the engien cranking you should see the voltage changing ( If i'm not mistaken ) According to CA position. I've run acrossed this problem with my 88 gxl. That is the only reason why most of the wiring schematics are burned into my soul. lol. Good luck.

Ok well when problem first came about I checked things first spark fuel. Noticed coil pack wasn't firing but was getting power to coil pack. Got a new one. Checked fuel noticed it wasn't the greatest. Opened fuel tank and found globs o rust in tank droped it and replaced fuel system . Rust in an fuel system is no good... after that was done car started fine. Drove for and hour or so. Made a sharp turn down my street and it bogged down. Let off gas and made it into my complex. Got into the complex went over the speed bump slowly n car just died. Hasn't started up since. Hope tis clears up. This car wasn't taken care of so far as I haven seen....

Please bare with me and ways of desribing this problem....... the car did this on Monday to start drove it out to get it reg. I took sharp turn and it bogged down. Got pulled over as I was turning because no tag. As I waited there the car just bogged down. That's when I started checking over the car.. found all kinds of issues.. no spark from coil pack. Water in tank... fixed both issues and she ran great for about an hour or so. After that she just bogged down again after turning and then died on my way in to my complex after going over the speed bump..

My mistake on the gender confusion, and good, glad you go tthe spark figured out..

As for your bogging, if you can, hook up a fuel pressure tester in a safe manner and drive the car and check the fuel pressure as you turn and such. mazda 6's and Ford focus' are notorious for issues under corner with fuel. That would be my next step. Wiggle testing everything can be a pain the the ****. Like I said, best of luck.

Hmm Won't start up again..? Well, at this point i'd start back at the basics. Air, fuel, and spark. It's a jacked up circle, but yougotta start somewhere. At this point i'd be drinking a few beers and taking a break. I'm at the point currently with my car. hahaha
