87 starts then dies

I have a 1987 rx7 and just recently I was driving my car and it died in the middle of me driving it. I started it and I drove it to a parking lot but the car was bogging a lot and eventually died. I noticed the small screw from the fuel regulator fell out and I installed again and now the car will start go to 3000 rpms for a few seconds then it will slowly die. I tried starting it and getting on the gas but it seems like it would just die faster. There was one time that I was able to keep revving it to 7000 but as soon as I let off it died. Any ideas?

If your fp screw came off, maybe the diaphragm broke. So I'm guessing your having a ton of fuel flooding issues since it's not regulated. Replace it and see what happens.

Are you sure the screw came out of the FPR? If it came out of the pulsation dampener then the item needs to be replaced (pulsation dampener causes engine fires when it goes bad).

Thanks for the response. I didn't see the screw come out but it was off and sitting on the engine so I put it back in. It's not leaking any fuel. Today I'm gonna look for vacuum leaks and ask around for a pulsating damper. If I don't find anything I'll be buying a new one from mazdatrix unless you know of a cheaper place or a way to rebuild it.

Once the screw falls out it is a goner and cannot be fixed.

Well I replaced the fpd with the banjo bolt and the car will start but only rev to 2000 rpm then die. If I get on the gas the car dies faster. If I slowly get on the gas it will rev up but once I give it too much gas it'll bog out and die. Any suggestions?

You could have a vacuum leak. Or it could be an AFM problem. You could jumper the fuel check connector and unplug the AFM and see if it will idle w/o having to fight the car to keep it running. Don't run the engine too long w/the AFM unplugged or the exhaust manifold will begin to overheat and so on. And your engine grounding might need attention.

Banjo bolt on, still nothing. No vacuum leaks. Air control valve is good. Tested the afm with a multimeter and that's good. Please help

If you can't run the car then how are you testing for vacuum leaks?

Have you done a compression test?

Have tried jumpering the fuel check connector?

Have you checked the fuel pressure?

And the primary injectors could be clogged.

You could switch the ECU pins where you have the secondary wires to the ECU going to the primary pin locations.

How have you checked the grounds?

With a cigar. Pull a line off and blow smoke in it. I got a new fuel pump again and it worked.

The fuel pump works or the car now starts properly?
