87 GXL Rough Running!!! Please Help!!!!

I am in dire need of help. My rx7 smells like a go-cart, running rich. There is a loss of power in the low rpms. Also the car lost its throttle respons under 4000 rpms. Past 4000 rpms the car has normal power. The idle is also very rough, however it doesnt die, but it stalls out if i slow down quickly.

Please Help!!

Start with a full tuneup. Plugs, wires, TPS adjustment, filters, etc.

When you pull the plugs, examine them. What do they look like? Dark black, white or tan?

Check for vacuum leaks.

Check the ECT sensor.

Now if all that checks out, you may have a leaking/sticking primary injector.

I replaced plugs wires....and fuel filter. Also when it idles and when I step on it it sounds like. A v8.
It used to randomly do it....then go bak to normal. If I unplug pressure sensor nothin happens.

You seem to have the same problem I'm having. Power will cut in and out intermittently, and when it does cut out, there is no power below 3.5/4k RPM. The "chug-a-lug" sound the engine makes IS similar to that of a truck, or some other large engine. Seems to me that one of the plugs isn't firing, or one of the injectors is clogged. It'd be great if you'd keep this topic updated, so we can hopefully find a solution.

I took it in for a diagnostic... They found nothing. They wanted to just replace my engine. Are apeX seals a possible problem? Or Does this seem like a strictly fuel related issue.
Also when I floor the gas at idle....the intake makes a double sucking noise rather than the fluent sucking noise any ideas?

So did you check your TPS and ECT like I asked?

Also check the condition of the wires and plug on the CAS.

i was having a similar problem with my 84 gsl and it ended up being my distributor. it was causing my secondary rotor to fowl out. ended up being an easy fix just replacing the distributor which happened to be the same on my 13b which i have a few extra's(greety with my engines)lol, retimed it and its running strong as ever. also if your just not getting a hot enough spark. like aaron cakes said. count your chickens before you go spending a lot of money. but if you have a spark plug fouling you will be able to tell by which spark plug smells like gas and has resin on it when you pull them out. and follow it back from there as far as ignition goes.

also the distributors arent too expensive on ebay under a bill

Im having a similiar problem with mine. My seems to be misfiring, i was told that it could possibly be the spark plug/ wires or my distributer cap just like aaron cake stated.

The 2nd gen has no distributor, and thus no distributor cap. At least in North America.

Low voltage output due to a faulty alternator/charging system will interfere in the car running properly.

Well this is a blast from the past. I've long since lost the car to a crash (I miss it greatly), but the problem I had was incredibly simple: fouled spark plugs. I felt really, really stupid after I changed them out and everything worked fine. In short: when in doubt, check the simple things
