MI 86 rx7 non turbo tranny noise

does anyone know what would cause noise coming from the tranny when clutch is out, no noise when clutch is in, and the release and pilot bearings were changed out.

Neither the pilot bearing nor the the release bearing make noise when the clutch is out. Only when the clutch pedal is pushed in do they rotate at different speeds in relation to the other tranny parts. I'd start with checking the fluid level and the u-joints.

Noise when the clutch is released will typically be the front main bearing in the transmission. I had to replace the one in my old NA transmission after it started making a droning noise while sitting in neutral w/ the clutch out.

You sure? My release bearing is pretty loud with my clutch out and before it warms up.

Of course now I have solid mounts everywhere. That may also be the cause...
