83 automatic stalls

ey my bro just bought a 83 rx7 automatic and it keeps shutting off. It idles at 1300rpm and its good at parking or neutral but as soon as it gets in drive or reverse it stalls and it turns off. I can drive it good with the choke on. Then it'll warm up and it'll drive okay. Then when I slam the gas it stalls again and shuts off again. He bought the car and the guy had removed the rats nest and all the vacum hoses where open. I closed the hoses and it ran alot better but its still shutting off. The car was sitting for 4 years and it blew alot of white smoke but then it stopped. It only blows smoke when it revs up to 7000rpms. I cant press the gas and brake at the same time cause it'll stall... it has 140xxx miles. I dont want to have to get a new engine

before doing anything else, find and ELIMINATE all the vacuum leaks. as a matter of fact, you may even want to consider putting the rat's nest back in.

Ok I'll try putting the rats nest back on. Do you think anything is up with the carburetor? I recorded a walk around of it a few days back when he first got it.
ill post back with updates

well, since the video does not feature the actual problem you're asking about, it wasn't much help. at this point, i'll leave the rat's nest re-install up to you, i just figured it would help you locate any leaks better, but the car looks like it's been worked over by the previous owner and so maybe the problem is elsewhere. from the video i can't really tell where the idle is, but it does sound fairly solid, your issue might be MORE than just a vacuum leak.

that air filter is probably not doing much good though. have you tried to run it without the filter to see if it makes any difference?

If vacuum leaks are solved, it could be wires/plugs. It's amazing how ignition upgrades help idle. A good carb clean/rebuild wouldn't hurt.

Checking the fuel pressure is a good start.

If it's not vacuum, ignition, and fuel doesn't fix your issue try an exhaust leak.

Have you looked into the possibility of a bad torque converter?
