79 GS carb problem

Just put in a rebuilt carb and gas is pouring in at the bottom of the carb. Engine runs, but very rough and way too much gas. Looking for suggestions or some place to get it fixed properly.

This is a very common issue with a fresh rebuild. The coating on the float needles is the issue, and causes them to hang up a bit. Try tapping on the top of the carb with something that won't damage it. Usually that will knock them loose and into the proper position again.

You can learn a lot about these carbs over at www.sterlingmetalworks.com

Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion. Haven't awakened it from Winter sleep yet. Will try this in the Spring.

Fired the car up this weekend. Gas still pouring in to primaries, gets worse at higher engine speed. Tried tapping on the carb - no better. Also checked the return line to the gas tank, and verified that gas was flowing through there. Both sight glasses are at about 1/2 level. Running out of ideas

Do you have the stock fuel pump?

That's an odd combination I think, fuel level at halfway while pouring fuel into the secondaries... Did you verify the level while it was running?

If a float was stuck open it could cause this, but then the fuel level would show as high in the windows.

Yes - I checked the levels in the sight glasses while the engine was running. The excess fuel is coming in through the 2 primaries, not the secondaries. The shop that sold me the rebuilt carb is asking that I remove it and send it back for testing. What a pain - there is so much to disconnect !

Try banging on the top of the carb with something that won't cause damage. That is sometimes enough to knock a stuck float loose, and that sounds like what is going on.

Thanks - I already tried that as per my post on May 23, but it didn't help.
