MD 2 questions, flames and maybe a axle problem?

i have a 1987 GXL 5-speed n/a it is my first 7 and my first RWD, and when i decel it makes a clunking sound from the rear end, i thought my CV joints were bad but im not sure, like i said its my second car and my first RWD so i dont have alot of experience with this kinda thing.

And my other question, i have my air pump and cats removed and an HKS air filter and an APEXi N1 catback with a deleted presilencer and sometimes when im out running curvey roads with my friends, we will park somewhere afterwards an they will tell me that somewhat steady flames would roll out of my exhaust and roll up my bumper and make no noise. i have my pressure sensor unplugged so i know its running richer than a rotary already does but this just started happening recentaly and i was wondering if anyone knew what caused this. i was afraid my injectors were leaking, which wouldnt be a big suprise but there not cheap and im 18 and only work on the weekends caues of high school so im not too excited at the thought of getting new ones.

Any help on either subject is great, thanks in advance!

Is the clunking sound just happen once upon deceleration or is it repeatedly happening over and over? A universal joint at each end of the drive shaft can make a clunk as you describe you might safely gain access to the drive shaft and attempt to turn it back and forth just slightly to feel for play. It's possible you could be hearing a broken rear differential mount. If the rubber portion of the mount controlling up and down movement of the rear differential is broken from the rest of the mount than you would hear the rear differential hit the bottom of the car upon acceleration from a stop. I'm not sure if this is what you are experiencing though. There are other components in the rear of the vehicle that could also be inspected.

thanks for the help, it does it repeatedly on deceleration and from time to time right when i pull from a stop. i will check every thing to night and get back to u guys later. and any help form anyone about the flames is greatly appriciated

question

Does the car ever seem to smoke from the exhaust at any point? Does it seem to make good power or does it run strangely? One more question, are there any after market mods?

no smoke or even carbon on the bumper. it pulls great and the engine is fairly fresh mileage wise, i have receipts from 1993 when the engine was replaced at 158xxx miles when i bought it it had 185xxx miles on it. and its got an APEXi N1 exhaust with the presilencer deleted and all the cats have been removed. i deleted the power steering, AC and the air pump. im not bothered by the flames themselves, im just worried about it meaning something is wrong.

sounds like excessive backlash (play) in the ring and pinion.

Flames are normal for your car and what you have done with it. Mazda had the 2nd gens tuned rather rich from the factory for safety.
