Unhappy 1986 n/a to s4 tII

This is Dave and I am starting an engine drive train swap from a n/a to a s4 TII. I purchased a 1987 car front end with all wiring and drive train. Do I keep the engine wiring harness from the TII and couple it to the 1986 original dash harness? I read some of the experienced guys info but wasn't sure. Do I keep the 1986 engine harness and put it on the 1987 TII motor? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi Dave
Can't answer about the tII part, but I do know you will have to pay attention to the impedance of your fuel injectors (having dealt with that myself). Sometime in late '87 the impedance changed from low (about 2 Ohms) to high (about 13 ohms). You can easily check the "impedance" using a Volt/Ohmmeter.
To confirm your engine harness (sure to be set up for low impedance for '86) if you look beneath the air cleaner on the fender you will see the rectangular resistor pack and its 5-pin connector.

Another Dave

It's Official..Mr Wankel..you have Triplets!
...................
the N/a car's cluster has no Boost gauge so you would lose that if you kept the N/A cluster.
I put an 89 engine in a 1986 N/A using an S4 TII ECU and components.I left the s4 N/A harness in and used that.Worked fine..( I am now standalone, same car).
Most guys will get a separate boost gauge anyways, along with a wide-band,after market oil pressure and Coolant Temp gauge,as the old stock gauges are unreliable and don't tell you how much PSI or degrees of Temp.
There are some differences in wiring pin out between the N/A and TII harness so be aware of that when you go to swap.(I can't recall now,it's 7 years.).

nice to meet other Rx7 car lovers, so just to be clear I can use the tII engine harness and couple it to the n/a dash harness with some minor modifications, is that right?

If you have the S4 N/A engine harness you can use that.I found it easy.
You can use the TII engine harness also,if you want.I can't help you with that though,as I didn't use it when I converted.
All I know is that there is subtle differences in the 2 harnesses.
If SATCH sees this he can comment on it.He is a Whiz at wiring!

I will use the n/a wiring harness if I can, what about the knock sensor, and do I plug it into the turbo II ecu? The plugs for the fuel injection are a different color.

You can always change the injector clips.I changed mine to newer ones anyways as I didn't trust the crappy plastic.
I didn't run the knock sensor..and yes the S4 Na harness plugs right into the TII ecu.Gotta clip a wire on the Power steering though,as it would have been used for knock and every time you turn it will retard timing!..there's a write up on how to do it.Easy, just snip by the Ecu connector, done.
Brighton?..Big Freakin Apple sittin beside the 401 Brighton?

That's great, I am going to try and get the engine back in over the weekend. I still don't know the site very well, I will look for the write up. I am 10 min north of the big apple. Thanks again, I will get back to you to tell you how it is going.

2nd gen FAQ (https://www.rx7club.com/new-member-r...faq-fc-782402/) or link in my sig. will answer all of your questions. The easiest way is to retain all of the NA wiring and make a few simple modifications.

I just moved here if you're looking to help fuel inject a 12A. And maybe figure out what I have to do to get the stupid thing through SSC. Everything seems more complicated in Ontario.

Hi everyone, I havent been on the site for a while, job change, started a business, etc... I finally got back to my Rx7. I swapped the N/A in my 86 for a T2 from japan, same year. I kept the n/a engine wiring harness with advice from misterstyx69 and it went well. Drive shaft from mazdatrix. The car is up and running and all seems good but when the turbo spools up the engine spits and sputters. I clipped the power steering wire at the ECU (1R, green with black stripe) so the timing would not be retarded. Any advice will be appreciated.
