1985 GS Lost all power, stalls a mile later, won’t start again

i’ve had issues on issues with my newly bought 1985 GS. Just as I fix something, another issue arises.

The other day I was driving downhill and the car in front of me slowed down to turn. I shifted from third to second, perfect rev match. After the car turned, I accelerated and noticed I had no power. The car barely moved in gear, it was almost as if I lost 90% of the tourque. The exhaust was quite a bit quieter, and shifting from second to third jolted the car. My friend told me that if it continued I might need a new clutch, because that is what his car had done when he blew his. I continued on for about a mile in fourth before the car stalled and wouldn’t start back up. We got it rolling down a hill and managed to roll start it into a parking lot, where I shut it off and parked it.

I read that it might be a fuel filter so I jacked it up and replaced that the next day. Still won’t start up, and the old fuel filter looked fine.

I can’t find any info on what may have caused this. Anyone experiencing something similar or have any suggestions? I need to move it and don’t want to get it towed.

Thanks for reading

Check spark at the plugs & fuel at the carb. If you have those, check compression.

Just did the plugs, no luck. How would I go about checking fuel at the carb? I put in a new fuel filter and the fuel pump is making noise. I’ve used carb cleaner to start it before. Anything else I can do?

To check fuel at the carb, take the supply line off at the carb and place into a jug. A two litter bottle works good. While holding the line in the jug, have someone turn the key to the on position but do not try to start. Have them turn the key off after a few seconds. It will give you a good amount. There is a procedure in the factory service manual found here Foxed.ca
