13B 6-port vs 12A -- which is better to port?

hi I've been searching and kinda think I know the answer but I am a self confessed Noob.

I had a 85 GSL-SE that I only ever added headers to and replaced the rear diff when I exploded it. 4.54 rear was ummm great fun.

anyway. I recently bought a 1985 GS with a 12A AND I also have a line on a GSl-SE 1985 that I am making an offer on.

what I want:

a 350-400 HP street car that I take to the track and drag/autoX

Question:

Do I Streetport the 12A because it can be ported larger

or

Streetport the 13B 6-port but I have read the porting is limited due to the extra ports

or

swap in a JDM 13B Cosmo that I can pick up online for about 1500 bones.

I am looking to keep the entire rebuild to around 6500$.

here's my current wishlist after reading here for last week+

moser axles -350$
roll the rear fenders - ?$
Ksport GT Pro Coilover kit - 1300$
Exedy Stage 2 Cerametallic Thick Clutch Kit - 375$
wheels/tires - ~1200$

leaves about 3k for the motor... what would you do? And yes I will keep searching and reading. This is an awesome site.

350-400Hp hummm?

Well you are not going to get that type of hp out of a NA with a Streetport, 12A or 13B.
You will need a bigger port job like a bridgeport. Then the 13B 6-port will not work with the BP.

Unless you go with a turbo, the 12A with a streetport and turbo will get you to 400 but you will be pushing it hard.

I would do the 12A if you are going to turbo it.

start with a turbo 13B motor, not necessarily the RE though. all told, you may not make your budget, but you will make the power you say you want.

Spend some time reading in the 2nd gen section. A 2nd gen TII engine would be a better choice to start with. If that's not in your budget, use the SE center iron and housings along with the 12A end irons and port from there. I would also suggest using the TII rotating assembly, flywheel/clutch upgrade, tranny, etc. Also check with Re-Speed for the coilovers and save yourself a ton of cash.

You said you have $3K to spend on an engine, yes? That should get you a reasonably well built street ported 13B. No matter what you do to a n/a 13B or 12A, you won't see anywhere close to 350-400HP. 200 is a pretty lofty goal, honestly.

I cant hit 200 with a ported and turbo'd 13B?

hanks for all the advice. re-speed is where I'll be buying most of my parts. that guy is awesome.

the GSL-SE seems to be falling through. no response from seller in awhile. I'll be yanking the 12A next weekend. I've heard things about a cosmo 13B but have also heard a few horror stories about engines imported from Japan. Can someone point me to a reputable supplier in the 1500-2k range?

thanks again for all the friendly advice.

you can get 300hp out of a 13b NA and lower to mid 200 with a NA 12A. I will add that this is with a 4 port 13b

Bridgeporting is magic!!!

dude, you can probably get a S5 T2 motor faster and for less than an RE. for the money you'd spend acquiring the RE, you could probably get a T2 motor and have some money to put towards getting it built.
