Need to install a cat

Hey all, I'm going to be getting my first (yay) T2 FC sometime later this month but apparently the car doesn't have a catalytic converter attached to it. I need one so I can pass emissions but I don't know if I should go to a dedicated Mazda shop or just another auto shop to get it done.

Does anybody have a rough idea of how much it'll cost or where I can get the job done well? Are there any particular cats that people recommend? I'm going down to Jersey to pick the car up so I might try to visit one of the shops down there.

Good luck getting it to pass emissions period, w/ or w/o a cat shoved in it.

Is it really that bad? I called up Rotary Performance and asked if their Bonez cat could pass it and they said yes. Are they wrong? Or do I also need to tune the fuel mixture and/or other technicalities?

Rotary Performance is not wrong. Depends on the car and what is done to it. Rotaries are just known to fail emissions tests and NY standards are not the easiest to pass.

Yes, it really depends on the condition of the car and various things with it.

Have you had a mechanic that knows rotary motors look at it before buying it? I would make sure that the buyer atleast presents you with compression readings on the motor before you hand over the cash. Check out the FAQ's on buying a car in the FC section.

Also, make sure the car is good and warmed up before you take it for inspection or your fuel reading will be off the charts.

The seller claims the engine pulls off 17-18psi vac @ idle.

I'm going down to pick it put this weekend at north Jersey- are there any particular shops you guys recommend? I know there is a bunch of places at Jersey from that other thread on the forum but not sure which one to hit up.

best thing to do is to go to autozone and pick up a compression tester for $25 and take it with you. A compression test will take all of 45 minutes to do.

just take the 75 $ ticket for inspection when you get pulled over and tell the cop thank you very much but I will not be getting my car inspected. Also don't rock a front plate they always love that.
