Angry I just destroyed my diff

I was coming home about an hour and a half ago. I was merging into traffic. So i went wot in 1st, redlined shifted to 2nd and BOOM! I was dead in the water...just kept rolling on momentum. At first i thought it was the tranny but there was no noise coming from it. I tried a different gear, nothing. I coasted to the left turn light on the parkway, ran the red and crossed over onto a side street(which happened to be where i was heading anyways). The car stoped rolling at this point and a guy that was stoped at the light got out and helped me push it off the road. I got under it and saw the gaping hole on the diff's rear cover. Its a pretty good size hole, about 4" long and 2" wide, needless to say i left a trail of redline fluid behind. Damn it, i had just changed it not more than a month and a half ago too!
The only good things i can say about the whole thing is that a) it happened about a block away from my place and b) a neighbor drove by a few minutes after with a big suburban and towed me home.
Get this, i'm supposed to be moving this weekend...yeah thats gonna go smooth now. I'm hoping i can find and install a replacement by Friday or i'm pretty much F*CKED!!!

yup, i'm just glad I was so close to home and that this particular neighbor drove by.
A few years back we were at the track and the same thing happened to one of my friends. He had to cough up about $500 to get it flatbeded back from Atco...
I'd go as far as saying that i'd take a gear from the tranny breaking rather than the rear...with the tranny you can get it home in a different gear(i blew up 1st gear in my FC but all other gears worked, sure they tranny was making all kinds of rattling noises but i got home).
BTW, with my driving style i should try to save up and pick up a spare tranny...seems like the next "weak" link. Well that and the axles but since i dont run slicks they should hold, right? lol

Not an accusation, but I’d always heard that the differential job is finicky and has to be done just right. Could the install have killed it, and you were just living on borrowed time? Or do you think it was old worn parts at fault?

ppf should be ok, i did replace it sometime in the spring. Might have done some damage then cause i did drive around for a while with it almost completely broken. The bushings i had replaced with the solid rx7.com kit and installed a diff brace at the same time. I'll be gettin under the car tomorrow and start working/inspecting the damage.

Well the most recent work on that part of the car was a left side seal that was leaking very slightly. Its most likely a comination of high mileage, sticky tires and me...

Ideally the t2 clutch type guts inside the fd housing, if you have that and dont ask more than i have...or at least the fd housing already found a t2 diff just not sure if its the "good" one yet.
btw, sent you a pm.

Update!

I just removed the diff and it wasnt in as bad a shape as i thought it would be...The cause was a shattered worm gear. As a matter of fact, all of the worm gears are kinda chewed up. Theres little pieces of shattered metal all over the place.
I checked my ppf and its in perfect shape, same goes for the diff mount.

Yup, torse is not up to par at all! I dynoed 325 at 10 psi but for some reason i cannot hit more than 6 to 8 in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. so I might have been close to 300...i know it should have been able to handle that much but oh well. whats done is done no ifs ands or buts.

ring and pinion look good. I turned it by hand and not a single chip on the ring gear...not sure about the pinion. I'll take it appart some day, right now i'm waiting on tofuball's diff, should be here tomorrow. BTW, i hope it lasts though...
Check the pics out!
