non-hot air intake

Just thought Id kinda update people with the rx7. Still slowly working on the haltech. Also figured it was a good time to fab up an intake that wasnt sitting in the engine bay. I picked up a 3" u pipe and filter from summit. Alittle cut here and alittle there and this is what I came up with. Turns out when they talk about leangth of a fliter summit is talking about just the filter surface not tottal area. So my new filter is way to big for what I wanted but it will be usable for when it is rainny out.

look part of my haltech harness haha

I am gona end up useing a smaller fliter and add more to the pipe to bend it away from the tire.

the big filter will probably end up being used close to this

rotaries don't hydro lock as easy as a pissedon. also his car is primarly a drift track car if I remember his other threads correctly, so dusty dirty roads don't tend to be a problem for track cars. Soooooo, no MAF looks like you're getting the haltech installed. Hurry up and get some new dyno numbers!!! lol.

We have a winner! The car is 98% track car and 2% driving to track car haha. Plus if it rains I find a dry spot to park since I dont have windows in the doors.

Haltech is getting pretty close to being done. I didnt have my lap top today but I did do a key on and the fuel pump came on. I will admit that was a big confidence booster right there. I am down to a bracket for the tps and welding a bung for the air temp sensor. I hope to be tuned and dynoed before the first drift event in march.

I will have some new pics of the intake probably tomorrow. I did get a smaller filter which sits almost right behind the hole for the brake ducts in the bumper.

They'd have to have good VE in order to be able to draw up water.

Oh yes they can hydro-lock.

BTW - Ever try to run an engine with a wet air filter? Amazing how restrictive a little water in the element can be. And how LONG it takes to clear out!

Rotaries can hydrolock but the odds are far lower than on piston engines. The reason being with our apex seals. On a piston ring, it has sharp edges. The seals rides back and forth. An apex seal rotates a little bit giving it a somwhat rounded profile. This is the key. As water is essentially noncrompressible (2% per 10,000 psi for all of you real picky people), this small rounded gap under the seal allows some water to get under there. When the engine tries to compress the water, the small amount under the seal allows the water to push the seal back into it's groove which lets the water flow through to the next chamber.

If the engine is idling or turning failry slowly, the odds of it hydrolocking are small. Not saying you won't stall your engine. You can. I've had to completely drain an engine that had water in it. It wasn't a fun job but it didn't die. If you ingest a large volume of water at higher rpms you run a much more increased risk of engine damage. The plus side to that is that at higher rpms and low load you have less vacuum which means less suction to pull water in with.
