Help me with my car....

Hello everyone. I am very new to the Rx7's as well as the rotary engines. I recently bought a 87 turbo II Rx7 and was just wondering if anyone knew how much it'd be for me get a blow off valve for it. I also was wondering if there was already a control on the car to change boast and all that or if I would have to buy one of those as well. Any help anyone can give me about my car and how to make it better would be much appeciated thank you! oh and also how much boast should my car be giving stock? It's running no more then 7 right now is that right? Thank you!

Check eBay for blow off valves, theres usually a good deal to be had there. Your car does not have a boost controller, you would have to add that on. You can pick up either a manual(inexpensive) or electronic(expensive) type. 7lbs of boost stock is right where it should be and I would highly recommend you don't raise that until you start upgrading the fuel system. Right now the car has a feature that cuts fuel to the rear rotor if the motor sees anything more than 8.6 lbs of boost, which is very harmful to the motor. You can get a product called a fuel cut defenser which eliminates that fuel cut, but I would still recommend installing larger injectors in the secondaries, a better fuel pump, and possibly getting an Apexi SAFC or a computer reflash from someone like Rtek. Until you do all of that I wouldn't raise the boost much.

Welcome to the forum. Welcome to our obsession... you'll either regret it or love it. Or, in the case of many of us; both. Heheh... it's well worth it though.

I'll write more later about your questions (I have to go...) but I just wanted to say hi for now!

You don't need nor want a blow-off valve.
If it's stock then you need to leave it alone until you've read up a little bit. Check out the 2nd gen form and fear the flaming!

Won't the blow off valve help the turbo and also make it last longer though!?

The stock BOV is fine until you start boosting fairly high, and I'd be more worried about having enough fuel and a few other things before the BOV.
For now, what I would focus on are the reliability mods.

Stock boost on a S4 Turbo is 6.7 psi IIRC; with fuel-cut around 7.5 psi (don't hit fuel-cut!)

There is no adjustable boost controller present in factory trim, other than your foot. Don't add one until the car is ready. That means: upgraded cooling system (radiator--these cars DO NOT tolerate overheating at all), fuel pump, injectors, ECU reflash (RTek) or piggyback fuel management (S-AFC, eManage, etc.), lots of other stuff. Search... this has all been covered a million times in much more detail. Before you do ANY performance modifications, read this article. Read it again. Read it again.

Change all the fluids in the car. Replace the oil and fuel filters, and check the air filter--replace if it's dirty. Inspect the plugs and wires, replace if necessary. Check the timing belt *cough* er, sorry about that... check the rest of the belts though, and verify that everything else you can is in working order. Considering that this is a 18 year old car, there is likely going to be some vacuum hoses that are brittle, wiring connections that are weak, and suspension and brakes components that are tired. Check everything with a fine tuned comb.

How many miles are on the car? Do you know if the engine has been rebuilt?

Check out the Factory Service Manual; you can find it for free online here or here.

Read the FAQ posted at the top of the 2nd Gen Technical Section. I've never seen such a cache of good information (other than the FSM) anywhere. Use the search button. OFTEN. All of your answers (and much more than you bargained for) can be found if you phrase the search terms correctly.

Check the oil often. These cars are deliberately designed to burn it, but they don't tolerate negligence.

And last but not least... let the car warm up fully before turning it off; every time!

Welcome to our obsession.

Thanks that helps a lot! I know that the engine has been rebuilt just over a year ago, the car has 98,000 miles on it and about 13,000 on the rebuilt engine. Is there a site that has pretty good parts for pretty cheap? Thanks for all the help so far, it's helped a lot!

5.5psi Stock Boost for 1987-1988 Turbo II (6.2psi max peak)
7.5psi Stock Boost for 1989-1991 Turbo II (8.6psi max peak)

The stock ECU will cut off fuel above 8.6psi. Once that is taken care, there are some guidelines to follow when turning up the boost.

hey hey I'm in lakewood off kipling and colfax... if you wanna meet up some time I'll help you with any questions in person... most of my knowledge though is what I've learned from this board and teamfc3s... don't ask me how to adjust your timing cause I'm scared to death to do that one thing myself... just cause I fear setting it a little off and causeing a lean condition... I won't touch that one part of my car... sounds dumb.. but seriousely I don't trust myself with timing... even though it's easy to do. and for anyone else in denver if anyone wants to meet up sometime to shoot the **** thated be super..lol. right now I just go to subaru meets cause those are the only reliable meets around here.. that and I feel bad for selling my gc8 for an rx7.

I'm down to meetup for rotors and beers but I'm ALWAYS working... day and night! Meh!

I'm on that side of town too--100th and Wadsworth approx. I'm always driving around alas but not in the '7, yet.

Finally started seriously working on the '7 though! I'm still a long way away from driving it but damn it feels good to get my hands dirty.

Jumbo: you're a TeamFC3Ser? Good to see another of us in the ranks... ZenkiDori lives 'round here. Maybe I'm thinking of Jinz... a red n/a FC in any case (is it so weird that I remember some people by their car?) I think I met him once at Discount Tire a few years ago...

/random thoughts.
