Terre Haute or Indianapolis area rotary experts?

(Read bolded text for short version)

Hello all,

My name is David - I'm a member of Team Rose Motorsports which is part of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. We have ourselves a 13B engine sitting in pieces after blowing it up at an autocross. Now, from what I've heard (this is my first year in the club), TRM has tried to rebuild this engine time and again, and it's never worked for very long. Our faculty advisor is growing tired of signing off on such large bills for new parts on this thing. We'd like to change that.

I've been put in charge of rebuilding the RX-7 and have taken full responsibility for making this thing run, and run well. The only problem, is the only car I've ever worked on is my Saab 900 (1988 & '93). I've come here in search of a rotary expert near(ish) Terre Haute, Indiana that would be willing to look over our shoulder as we rebuild the engine, hopefully adding some more modifications for higher power output. Our club is well funded, so reimbursement for your efforts will not be a problem.

I hope to gain the following things by having an expert rebuild the engine with us:
  • become knowledgeable in the area of our rotary engine
  • rebuild the engine properly for once, making it (relatively) reliable
  • teach more than one member of the club about the RX-7
  • possibly learn about tuning our Megasquirt set-up

If you think you fit the bill, or you know someone who does, please let me know. We would like to get the car autocrossing again before the school year's end.

David

AFAIK, it seems Banzai Racing is the only the shop around here. AIM tuning used to be the one but they are unfortunately not dealing with rotaries any more.

Yikes - that's a full 4 hour drive from us. I'll keep that as option though. Thanks

^ You would be better off buying some rotary rebuild videos and following them step by step.

That we actually have, thanks to one of the previous guys in the club. It's a video from Atkins Rotary.

I'm only here asking for help because apparently the engine has been rebuilt several times by this club, and never been done well. Looks like now it's my turn to try and keep her from blowing up.

well banzai is a no go. sounds like a good and knowledgable guy, chris, but he won't talk to me over the phone for free, and that's definitely required before i pack up my engine and drive 4 hours to see him.

anyone know of guys in st. louis or chicago? i noticed we have one vendor listed by the forums, but he's on the far side of chicago. i think it was a-spec tuning or something. i'll try him next of course if no one replies soon-ish.

I already looked at your parts for free via the pictures you provided and gave you a free opinion. As I said I am not going to spend countless hours on the phone , giving you free tech advise. Good luck with your engine project and becoming the "head rotary guy" .

What is it that you are looking to do that the video wont help with? There are others who are capable in Indianapolis.

I would like someone to look at our housings and tell us if they are in good enough shape to be worth rebuilding, or if we needs new housings. We also need our rotors drilled out to 3mm.

After the season is over, Eric Meyer @ Meyer Motorsports may have some time. He is located in Indy. He is a little involved in the World Challenge series at the moment.
