Problems with hand controller

Hey guys. I picked up a used hand controller from a fellow forum, the problem is I think I was sold a dead one. When I plugged in the controller, switched on the car I got nothing. Correct me if I am wrong but dont you just plug and play?
Is it fried or am I doing something wrong?
Also if it is fried, can I have it repaired?

thanks

Check to make sure your cable is good and is the right cable. A proper serial cable.

Either handset is dead or cable is dead. Or if your really unlucky, the socket on the microtech is dead.

Laptop works fine with the cable, so I guess the handset is dead. Wish I did not get ripped off by a fellow member .
Any chance of having it repaired?

did you remove the dongle/laptop adapter before hooking it up the hand controller? So that the cable goes straight from the ecu to the hand controller?

I had a 10' cable that would work with my laptop,
but not with my Handset.

I got a new 6' cable & the handset works now.
