Microtech wont connect with my laptop

Ok well first off i want to say that i dont thave have laptop adapter from Microtech, because a couple friends of mines who has microtech(but didnt wire it up yet) said that i can buy the 25 to 9 adapter from radio shack(which i did) and it will work just fine. Well i got everything wired up.. its getting power to the microtech, but when i connect the cable and try to communicate with the microtech nothing.

Something strange happends also, i can have the main harness for the microtech unpluged from the engine, but keep it plugged into my laptop and the yellow and red light will turn on. unplug it- turns off, plug it in- lights turn on

my question is, is there away around not buying that adapter?
Are all these problems from not having the adapter?

also im running the LT-4

thanx
