i have a similar problem connecting to my pc, maybe the microtech is sensitive to amd processors? your problem is probably the port settings in the control panel. try switching the usb port to port # 1 or #2.

try using the software on http://www.microtechefi.com/html/LTsoftware.htm or microtechusa.com

see if that helps... good luck

I just tackled this problem
1) connect microtech to adaptor and connect to laptop
2) Install software that came with the radioshack adaptor (must have power to microtech so the usb registers to the laptop
3) after install go into the properties of the adaptor in control panel/hardwar/device manager, must be done with power to microtech still on and the wires connected to the laptop
4) You'll see a tab for port settings, it defaults as com 4 for the usb, change that to com 1 or com2
5) apply settings and you should be on your way.
6) go to Microtech software and connect to the port you designated.

yeah, still doesnt work i pic up now the port and everything but the ecu data doesnt show up on the laptop. my friend that have a microtech dealership told me that i should get a 25 pin to 9 pin one instead because he had problems with his usb to 9 pin cables. im gonna see if dell can put a 25 pin port on my laptop

I don't see where you're having a problem... did you make sure you changed the port settings in the usb driver? If you didn't do that you won't pick up data. I was having the exact same problem and my Dell laptop is only a couple of months old. The thing you're looking for is not under usb drivers it's probably under another item in the device manager that's specifically named for your adaptor.

alot of the usb to serial dont work. this problem has been sproting up ever since this forum was created. it has nothing to do with the port settings really. ur just gonna have to try a different usb to serial adapter and or get a older laptop with a serial port.

yeah I've seen that some don't work. I was just saying I have virtually the same setup in terms of having the Radioshack adaptor as well as having a brand new dell laptop.
eddierotary if you need more help if you haven't already returned that adaptor, pm me and I'll try to help you out more, worst case scenario I'll take screen shots.

anybody have any thoughts why a pc using a parallel 9 pin cable will not connect to the microtech lt-8 using the dongle. i have connected before using a laptop with no problem, but will not work with the pc. would my processor(amd) have anything to do with it since the manual lists a pentium 133 as the minimum processor?

Could just be a hardware conflict of some sort maybe your processor, but I wouldn't think that would be the route cause. It's hard to say.
