fine tuning maps after engine rebuild

A little history first.
I bought the car with a broken engine. It was basically completely stuffed after destroying its torrington bearings and pumping them all through the engine.so i bought another engine and ported it to similar specs and rebuilt it.
Im very confident in the previous tuners programme so plan on keeping it the same.
I have a couple of questions re the tune.
Engine has 44 kms on it and is currently idling with about 18Hg vac.
The car starts easily but idles a bit low and starts to die and then the microtech does something to raise the idle for a couple of seconds and then drops again.
So up and down goes the idle.
1.What function is raising the idle to keep it running and what changes should i try to get an even idle.
2.In one of aaron cakes posts he mentioned he sets idle at 1500 rpm on his fresh engines.Whats the correct way to raise the idle.
My thoughts are adjust the idle screw til it comes upto 1500 rpm.Do i then calibrate my tps at this idle? and do i need to adjust any other settings to suit this new idle.
Any help much appreciated.

After doing some more searching it seems idle maybe too lean. The rise and fall of the revs seems to be on very constant timing whereas i thought too lean would give more of an erratic surge.guess ill increase my injector timing at idle and see what happens

Its pulling good vacuum motor sounds healthy. What injectors and model microtech you using? I Usually like to set idle rich hold rpm about 1000-1200 and start taking fuel from all vacuum points. My technique ill rev the engine to 2-3 and back off and let it come to idle by itself. Then adjust accordingly. If the car is running lean then idle will be temperamental and vacuum leaks will also cause that as well.

Car has 550s and 1000s and LT8S.
Its a 86 I think you call them GSLE over there with a S4 87ish FC turbo conversion.
It has standard coils,45 PSI fuel pressure no errors.12A hi flow.
i rebuilt and ported the donor engine myself and ports are fairly close to the previous extend (street)ports.
I know the previous tuner and hes one of the best around here im trying to book in there atm Im assuming it idled nicely previously. Its an hour drive to the tuner so id like to get the idle steady more to know its behaving nicely and showing no possible problems.Im also not keen to assume the previous owner hasnt adjusted the tune.
It drives nicely around the streets in all of the vacumn maps except maybe a tiny bit too much bucking on decel.
My guess is maybe its pulling more vacumn than previous engine when last being tuned and its trying to idle in a map area that was previously an overrun or cruise area but im a first time engine builder and microtech noob so that could be completely wrong.
Thanks for the response

Ive just had a play with mix trim and adding 12% has got the idle steady.
So car was lean at idle.Obviously i should add this 12% to the idle areas in the main map and then reduce trim back to O.
Im going to search for some maps with similar setups and see how they compare.
As im a noob playing and dont want to blow the engine i will only play with making things slightly richer. Noobs like me should stay well away from leaning fuel out or advancing timing as thats a real danger zone.

ive been playing again and noticed the fuel pressure has settled to about 35psi so think thats why i had to up the mixtrim. i will reset reg to 40-45 psi tomoz and hopefully this will bring mixtrim back to around 0.

40-42 psi is usually where I set base fuel pressure. Bumpstart is probably one of the best tuners I've ever talk to on this forum. Mix trim is more like a tool for me for diagnosing changes but I always set it to "0".
Good stuff mate.

Yeh i was using mixtrim to get the idle right and too know if it was too lean or too rich.
As im a noob i didnt want to play with any of the main maps.
Another issue i had was i set the fuel pressure at 42 whilst running instead of primed so in reality fuel pressure starts at 48 and drops to 42 whilst running.
Will get the car run in nicely and then back to bump for a few more tweaks.
I also learnt dont tune the handset whilst driving on the way to bumpstarts.
1.yes its dangerous
2.The handset has the shittiest buttons ive seen on any piece of electronics.you can buy a $1 toy with better buttons and can cause issues when changing from view to program and i ended up doing some random adjustments
Car started running like crap and thought it may die but made it to bumps and he fixed within 2 mins.
So yes i was stupid twice and im an idiot so please no one try this at home

When I just got my motor rebuild she required more fuel till it develop full compression. You will notice as time goes by. It's also a good idea to install a wideband if you don't already have it..

The car is nicely tuned now for run in thanks to bump.
A wideband is my next investment for fine tuning the car
