connection problems

I have an lt-8 and I am having issues with connecting it to a pc. I bought the usb adapter from microtech and everytime I try to connect it, it says no connection to ecu. I switched the usb port to com port 1 and still same result. Any suggestions?

I have the dongle and then a adapter from 9 pin serial to usb. The adapter had a software (CD) with it that you have to download on your laptop first. I usually use com port4 to establish connection not 1, 2, or 3. I havent used the new dongle with the built in usb but if theirs software that comes with it then most likely you need to download if not disregard....

downloaded software, that what I'm trying to connect the lt-8 with. I read that com ports 1 and 2 were the desired ports. I am using the uart bridge usb adapter that goes from serial to mini usb then to usb

Have you set the USB adapter to either COM1 or COM2? You may need to disable an existing port before you do this because many laptops still have a UART even though they don't have the physical ports.

But is there a COM2 already in the computer? If so, you need to disable it.

Also, turning down all the buffers on USB adapters sometimes helps.

To be honest, I stay away from USB adapters because most of them suck. I have a PCMCIA serial card that has actual hardare UARTs inside.

there is a com2 already in the computer but it shows that it wasnt assigned to anything so i assigned it to usb adapter. do i still need to disable it if it wasnt shown as "in use"?

If it shows up in Device Manager, you need to disable it. Preferably in the BIOS if possible.

I had the same issue using the 9pin dongle. I had to reassign ports on laptop and once i got it to connect it would only read for a few minutes then the microtech software would throw out errors left and right causing me to lose any changes. I'd have to reboot and start all over. I am about to get rid of the microtech at this point. Im tired of it. Car is tuned by Steve Kan and some of the crap the ecu was doing he couldnt figure out why.

That's a little odd...I'd look more towards the laptop and what is running on it than the Microtech. The Microtech may have it's limitations, but weird behaviour is not one of them. Maybe there's something running in the background that is polling the serial port? Like a Logitech mouse driver?

The laptop software crashing shouldn't cause you to lose changes either because they are done in real time on the ECU.

At first i thought it may have been the laptop so i tried a friends laptop and same thing. I also used my wife's laptop (even though she nagged about me getting it all dirty) and same thing. I switched cables since i was using a 9pin to usb to a 9pin male/female cable. Same thing. I deleted the program completely and re-downloaded it from microtech's site and it helped for a bit, but then after about 10-15 mins it started with the errors.
The only changes i had made were on the rpmWOT page and when i went back in to finish, none of the changes were as i left them.
