Wasted spark. But not getting any.

First off. I've got an ae86 not a rotary. However, I'm using two leading coilpacks from an FC. Then using a trigger wheel and dual spark output chips. So i figured you guys would be the ones to ask.

I need to know this. If the 12v wire (brown) is given power, and the signal wire (which i believe is supposed to ground the coilpacks out) is put to ground. There should be constant spark correct?

Thanks for any help.
Michael

Nope.

The coils trigger when a voltage is applied to the trigger (pink or red wire I think) wire.

You can test this by giving the coil 12V and grounding the base of the ignitor. Then use two AA batteries in series to trigger the coil by touching the + to the trigger wire. It will fire everytime you touch the batteries.

Okay, now i'm confused.

I was told to test the coilpacks by using two AA batteries in series. + end to the signal wire. (i guess the other end to ground). Then the igniter is grounded through the case and +12v wire connected to ign power. It worked. Then I did the test with the LED that worked (figured stacking batteries). So:

Signal wire from coilpacks requires ~2.4V.

Signal wire from MS gives 0.0

That is why I'm not getting spark. What do I do to give 2.4v to the coilpacks?

I guess one idea was to insulate the packs from ground, provide a constant 2.4v and make the MS ground the igniter. This seems pretty.... retarded. And I know for a fact we had it wired up just using the front three wires.

First, I am assuming that you are firing the coils throught the ignitor. If you are trying to fire them directly you need to use the high current coil driver in the MS.

Second, do you have your 4.7K pullup resistors installed on the LEDs correctly?

Well, the MS was prebuilt by RS autosport. I haven't changed anything inside the MS since it ran. The only things that have changed: Wiring and the msq. Which I'm having someone look at now.

Thanks for the help thus far.

:'( I can't find the edit button...

uhh so I think the only way I'll be able to figure out what's going on is to borrow an oscilloscope. So I'm going to do that and go from there.

Can you clarify how you are trying to fire the coils?
