Is using the CAS really worth it?

Before i start building this thing, i need to see which route i want to go. I could just use it for fuel and use the oem distributor. But i could use the FC CAS and have spark control as well.

This is a stock port 12a, natural aspir.

thoughts?

If its not out of your budget to buy the CAS and the leading and trailing coils (as well as some shielded wire for the CAS signals, you'll really want it), then its definitely worth it. There will be a little uncertainty just setting up the maps, but once they're dialed in and you can play with them a little or put the car on a dyno, it will be completely worth it since you'll never need to worry about replacing distributor caps, water in the distributor, vac advance failing or any of the other things, plus you can dial in the advance with much more precision than you could otherwise, and probably pull a little more power/response out of the engine too

That's a really good question.

I'd say that if all you are looking for is fuel control, then the "hassle" associated with getting the CAS and 2nd gen coils to work may not be worth it. It can be very straightforward at times, but other times dealing with noise is an involved process. If you're shy with electronics, making the 2nd VR circuit can be a challenge.

On the other hand, it will give you complete timing control and take the dizzy out of the equation.

That said, triggering the MS as fuel only from the leading coil is a DEAD SIMPLE installation and will ALWAYS WORK. With approximately a 30K resistor in series with the ignition pickup from the coil you will never see noise (and even a little noise is inconsequential).

What you might consider doing is starting out by triggering from the coil, then one fuel is dialed in move to the CAS setup. Just make sure to run the extra wiring you need when you make the harness.

hmm. i have a CAS or two or three floating around. Coils aren't a big deal either. But the issue was just in, is it worth my time to build it into the board.

although im sure i can find a base map for the stock port 12a to get it started at least.

I actually am gathering all the stuff to do a similar project. I decided I want to just control fuel and use a stock distributor. Although I think this might have been asked before, what megasquirt would be the best without getting one with a bunch of stuff on it that wont get used?

Use the V3 board. It is preconfigured to trigger from the dizzy. If you use the GM sensors, no modifications to the board are necessary to run a rotary with the dizzy.

lol, you guys would think i'm crazy but i just did the opposite with my megasquirt. I installed it just so i could use the fc3s ignition in my 12a fb. It still has the holley carb on it but one day i'll use the pro-jection throttle body.

In your case i would build it to use the cas the way it is with both VR circuits. In the future even if you dont use ignition right away you will have piece of mind all you have to do is add wires to your harness and not have to mess with the ms unit.

But i would strongly recomend building it and using all of it's features all at once that you want to use.

Than start there bro, the good thing with megasquirt is you can always add things later. Just to give you piece of mind it took me 4 months to figure out how to build the megasquirt and install it in my car to make it run.... Never give up. I love megasquirt now!
